TalkTalk UK Broadband ISP Interview

"TalkTalk has also become an outspoken critic on issues such as opposition to the disconnection of illegal file sharing suspects"

TalkTalk Logo TalkTalk first truly began life in 2003 after its parent company, the Carphone Warehouse (CPW), launched a residential landline service. This service was based off CPW’s prior 2002 acquisition of Opal Telecom, which brought with it the flexibility of a landline network. The TalkTalk that most people know today began life towards the end of 2004 with the launch of its combined broadband and phone calls package (the broadband aspect became “free” in 2006).

Today TalkTalk, which took ownership of AOLs customers in 2006, is moving towards greater independence from CPW and recently completed the acquisition of Tiscali UK, which catapulted them into a position of being the second largest broadband provider in the market with over 4.1m subscribers. Since then TalkTalk has also become an outspoken critic on issues such as opposition to the disconnection of illegal file sharing “suspects” and the 50p next generation broadband tax.

Naturally we wanted to know more about TalkTalk’s current position on these issues and have conducted a short interview with the ISP to gain a few answers. The provider gave us responses from several different individuals and as a result this interview is credited to TalkTalk in general rather than a specific person.

1. Who are you and what do you do?

ANSWER: Over the last five years TalkTalk has invested over £1 billion to transform the UK broadband and voice market into the most vibrant and best value in the world.

Today, we deliver broadband to more UK homes than any other operator and are consistently voted the best value broadband provider in the UK residential market.

We continue to believe in bright ideas, big or small - such as our 'emergency tariff' for customers hit by the economic downturn. Ideas to keep bills low, make the internet a safer place, and provide a more reliable broadband connection.

Talk Talk is indisputably by far the WORST ISP in the known universe. I don't make that assertion lightly, I am speaking from the position of having been with a number of different ISP's over the past 9 years, and believe me there have been real howlers amongst them. I can say though that Talk Talk really are the worst ISP you will ever come across, I ABSOLUTELY GUARANTEE IT!

Talktalk, previously Tiscali, have in their infinite wisdom changed the email page and it has not worked properly since. I cannot access email most of the time and the Indian call centre just says it is being fixed and little messages on the login page to say that the engineers are working on the problem. Would it not have been better to leave well alone, if it ain't broke don't fix it! The reason I am on this site is to find myself another ISP but they all seem to be as bad as each other, with the exceptionof BT, which is the worst company in the known universe to deal with.

I completely regret swapping to talk talk, I was previously with Sky and my download speed was always in excess of 4mb - I'm lucky to get over 1mb now and my sonos media equipment often fails due to low speed! Disasterous.

I have an account with tiscali (recently taken over by talk talk) and I can say that they throttle the bandwidth. The difference between 1am and 5 to 11pm is 2 meg as opposed to 1/4meg if I am lucky. Also since talk talk took over at night I used to get over 3 meg.

The title of your Article is confusing. Surely you are aware that UK Broadband is the name of the company that operates as NOW Wireless Broadband in this country.

I find this comment very amusing.
