ISPreview.co.uk Website Status Report

ISPreview.co.uk’s web server was given a major software update today, which knocked a few systems offline. Thankfully we were able to repair the most vital ones by midday, although our Jargon Buster and Survey systems remain offline while we attempt to correct for one or two bugs in the configuration. Sorry if this has caused any inconvenience.

Hyperoptic Attacks BT Opposition to National UK Fibre Broadband Rollout

The boss of urban fibre optic broadband ISP Hyperoptic, Dana Pressman-Tobak, has warned that last week’s comments by BT’s Strategy Director (here), Sean Williams, whom suggested that there was “no business case to support” a full UK roll-out of true fibre broadband (e.g. FTTP) services, could be “very dangerous“.

Virgin Media UK and Everything Everywhere Targeted for Takeover

Cable giant Virgin Media and mobile operator Everything Everywhere (Orange UK and T-Mobile) have allegedly become the targets of a colossal takeover bid by two private equity firms, KKR and Apax Partners, which is being headed up by Tom Alexander (former CEO of Everything Everywhere).

UPDATE Ofcoms UK Business Telecoms Review Unlikely to Make Big Changes

Ofcom has started a new review of the £2bn UK business telecoms market that proposes several changes to help “meet growing demand for fast data services“. Unfortunately any ISP hoping for improved access to BT’s network of dark fibre lines will be displeased, yet they do propose to regulate 1Gbps+ wholesale leased lines that exist outside London.

ITU Urges G20 to Focus on Broadband Rollout for Economic Recovery

The Broadband Commission for Digital Development (BCDD), which was setup by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) in May 2010 to help meet the UN’s global broadband development targets, has issued an open letter that calls upon the G20 leaders to focus on broadband access as a means to boost the world economy.

UK ISP Vispa Complete 60Mbps Wireless Service in Burtonwood and Winwick

Cheshire-based internet provider Vispa has confirmed the completion of their 60Mbps (Megabits per second) capable superfast wireless broadband (wifi) network in the civil parish villages of Burtonwood and Winwick (Warrington, England).
