Cable operator Virgin Media are replacing their existing security solution for broadband customers with the new cloud-based software from F-Secure SAFE, which will be free for one year (£7.50 per quarter thereafter) and aims to protect customers from harmful apps, viruses and other online malware.
The new solution also includes “device-level parental controls” and SMS/MMS blocking tools to “help parents restrict access to material they consider unsuitable online“. It can even protect against unwanted calls or texts on mobiles.
Joe Lathan, Virgin Medias Director of Broadband, said:
“F-Secure SAFE will help keep our customers safe online, enabling them to choose the level of protection that’s right for them. We’re going to be working closely with F-Secure to ensure all our customers understand the best ways to stay safe online and, alongside our forthcoming whole-home solution, we’re providing all the tools and helping our customers make the right choices for them and their household.”
It should be noted that this software is separate from Virgin Media’s forthcoming “whole-home solution” that will protect any home network devices that connect to the customers’ broadband service and safeguard them against online threats; this is also likely to include the controversial network-level filtering that PM David Cameron has demanded from all of the big ISPs.
