Barden Network Expansion in Wales Fuelled by BDUK and BT Broadband

Tuesday, Jun 24th, 2014 (1:46 pm) - Score 3,421

Barden Network Engineering, which is a subcontractor for Carillion (BT’s contractor for the UK superfast broadband FTTC/P roll-out) that specialises in cable installation jointing and splicing, has announced plans to create 25 new jobs in Merthyr Tydfil after it began setting up a new depot on the Cyfarthfa Industrial Estate in Merthyr Tydfil (Wales).

The development follows Carillion’s decision to appoint BNE to help roll-out BT’s new hybrid fibre and fibre optic broadband infrastructure in Wales, most of which is now occurring as part of the Welsh Government’s Superfast Cymru scheme that aims to make the operators FTTC/P network available to 96% of Welsh premises by the end of spring 2016.

At the end of last year a Carillion telent (60:40) joint venture signed a deal (extension of an existing contract) with BT to help deliver their superfast broadband network to 33 Local Authorities across the United Kingdom, which all form part of the Government’s wider Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) programme. The three and a half year extension was at the time said to be worth up to £500m, subject to performance.

Kevin Morris, MD of Barden Network, said (Wales Online):

We’re delighted to have secured a depot in Wales, and Merthyr in particular, and we’re thrilled that Herbert R Thomas was able to secure the ideal property for our expansion.

By having such a central and local base, it will enable us to install superfast broadband more efficiently as travelling time will be minimised. The depot is part of our long term investment in Wales. We have already tapped into the Welsh employment market by creating over 25 jobs.

We also feel it is important to use local suppliers, such as builders, which will hopefully help the local economy. We’re looking forward to an exciting future in Wales.”

The new depot, which consists of a single unit (unit two) on the industrial estate with a total size approaching 26,000 sq ft, is BNE’s first in Wales. The company already has 3 depots in England (including their HQ in Wotten-Under-Edge) and is home to more than 180 staff. A lot of its future work in Wales is expected to focus on Swansea, Neath, Port Talbot, Vale of Glamorgan, Bridgend and Rhondda Cynon Taf.
