The Connecting Shropshire project in England has announced a list of 13 new telephone exchange areas that can expect to be upgraded to support BT’s new “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network by December 2015.
The project currently aims to expand the coverage of BT’s NGA network to reach 93% of local premises by the end of Spring 2016 and this is later expected to hit at least 95% by 2017 through additional Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) funding. It should be noted that some 111,000 premises in Shropshire can already access the new service thanks to various separate commercial investments by the private sector.
So far the Connecting Shropshire scheme itself has helped over 19,000 extra homes and businesses across 25 telephone exchange areas to be put within reach of FTTC/P. In addition, 75 street cabinets have already been installed (customers can currently order from 55 of those) and a further 20 cabinets should go live in the next few weeks. Today’s announcement of 13 new areas should also benefit a further 7,500 premises (some in-fill in existing FTTC areas may also be involved).

The local scheme has also introduced a more detailed coverage map, although it still seems to be somewhat generalised through vague colour coding and doesn’t shrink down to street level. But you do get better results by running a postcode check through the map.
