The Gloucester City Council is currently developing a plan to upgrade their existing CCTV infrastructure, which will include support for supplying a free public WiFi wireless Internet network in the city centre.
Apparently the matter is due to be discussed today during one of the councils cabinet meetings and, assuming there are no major obstacles, then tenders for the CCTV and WiFi contract will be put out. Funnily enough it was a message from the ITS Technology Group that drew our attention to the matter and we half wonder if they might have an interest, although there are plenty of others who could bid.
Jason Smith, CEO of Marketing Gloucester, said:
“Free Wifi would be brilliant for Gloucester. It would benefit visitors, many of whom are from overseas and face high data charges. It would also benefit people living in the city who perhaps can’t afford WiFi. It would greatly improve digital inclusion.”
The city is required to provide free WiFi access during the 2015 Rugby World Cup and thus any supplier would probably need to have the network in place by April 2015.
