Fibre optic ISP Hyperoptic has today announced that their Gigabit (1000Mbps) capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network is now being deployed across parts of Nottingham city in Nottinghamshire (England), with the first large building to go live being Marco Island.
The provider tends to focus on connecting larger buildings (e.g. Multi-Dwelling Units [MDU] with at least 50 units) or big office blocks and their service is already available to well over 100,000 premises, although the medium-term plan is to reach 500,000 premises by 2018.
The majority of Hyperoptic’s coverage is in London, although they’re also in the process of deploying services to Cardiff, Bristol, Reading, Manchester, Leeds, Liverpool, Sheffield, Birmingham, Glasgow and Newcastle.
Meanwhile the deployment to Nottingham has just begun, with Marco Island (one of the biggest city centre developments) being among the first to benefit. We found a video of this building online, although you might want to mute the terrible music.
Hyperoptic added that it’s “committed” to extending their FTTP/B footprint “across the length and breadth of the city by the time the year is out“, although this is perhaps a little misleading because it will only be physically deployed to larger buildings where the demand is strong enough.
Nick McDonald, Councillor for Nottingham City Council, said:
“We are delighted to see new internet service providers entering the Nottingham market, as this enables more high speed services to the small business community. We’re encouraging the growth of the supplier market, as we know access to fast, reliable broadband is essential and is one of the foundations needed to encourage more growth in the city.
It’s a great time to welcome Hyperoptic as businesses can currently access funded grants [Connection Vouchers worth up to £3,000] through us to cover the cost of upgrading their connection.”
The ISPs packages are priced based on whether or not you take a standalone (broadband-only) or bundle (broadband and phone), with Phone Line Rental typically adding £16 inc. VAT per month to the cost of bundled services. A 12 month contract is also applicable to most deals.
Otherwise Hyperoptic’s packages also include a free wireless router, free installation (note: standalone users will have to pay a £40 activation), unlimited usage and those who take the phone service will also benefit from free evening and weekend calls.
