As promised Vodafone has today announced that their recently launched fixed line home broadband and phone packages, which were initially only available to some customers living in certain parts of the country, have now been expanded to the rest of their customer base.
The original June 2015 launch article contains a full summary of Vodafone’s related packages and prices (here), although since then we haven’t seen much publicity from the operator and in all likelihood they probably wanted to wait until the network deployment had completed before kicking off their marketing drive.
Mind you it still needs some work because our attempt to visit the ‘Broadband‘ section of their website this morning resulted in an “Error 404–Not Found” (https://www.vodafone.co.uk/broadband/deals/index.htm), which is probably not what they were intending to happen. No doubt this will be resolved quicker than you can make a cup of tea (we hope), but it’s bad timing given today’s news.
Jeroen Hoencamp, CEO of Vodafone UK, said:
“We have had great feedback on our broadband service from the customers involved in our regional launch. We are really pleased that they are finding the speeds as fast as they hoped for, while the Vodafone Connect companion app gives them an unprecedented level of control over their devices. We are looking forward to many other customers taking us up on our great offer and joining us on our journey to be the UK’s leading providers of entertainment services.”
Cindy Rose, Consumer Director at Vodafone UK, said:
“We started our broadband journey with an exclusive offer available only to a few Vodafone customers. We have now extended this to all of our millions of customers as our way of saying thank you for their loyalty. We know our customers depend on us to stay connected, and now we can satisfy their needs both at home and on the go.”
Admittedly Vodafone Connect faces a very difficult uphill struggle by entering an already well established and aggressively competitive market. The initial package offerings appear to be reasonably well positioned for the budget conscious consumer, particularly existing Voda mobile customers, although at the same time they don’t demonstrate much originality. Likewise the TV product won’t follow until later this year.
In terms of what you can actually get, all of the packages below require customers to also take Vodafone’s own Phone Line Rental, which costs from the equivalent of £13.59 per month when pre-paid for a year in advance or £16.99 as a standard monthly charge. Plus you’ll pay a £30 activation fee for “fibre” and or £60 if you need a new phone line installed. A £6.99 router delivery fee also applies. The router you get is also a fairly capable 802.11ac WiFi supporting device.
