The Gloucester City Council and BT have today jointly switched on a new network of free unlimited wireless Internet access (WiFi) hotspots across the city centre, which is naturally called GloucesterCityWIFI (SSID).
The city is required to provide free WiFi access during the 2015 Rugby World Cup and a contract was finally agreed in June. The deal also includes a new state-of-the-art CCTV service, cameras and control room, not to mention improved phone coverage for 4G mobile and other services.
Signs are also being placed on lamp-posts around the city centre in order to let pedestrians know when they’re within the new free wi-fi zone. BT will manage the combined services for up to 10 years.
As for the Rugby, the first match (England v Fiji) will take place tomorrow at 20:00 in London, while Gloucester will get its chance on Saturday when Tonga play against Georgia at 12:00. The final match will be held on 31st October 2015.
