Customers of Virgin Media’s mobile tariffs have been told to expect a price rise of 1.6% from 1st July 2016, which they say is in line with the Retail Price Index (RPI) rate of inflation announced in April when the figure was at its highest (it’s back to 1.3% now) and there are a few other increases too.
The Price Changes Page on Virgin Mobile’s website states that “the RPI increase doesn’t affect the cost of calls, texts or data out of your monthly allowance“, but a few lines below that there’s still a big heading that states how the “costs for going out of your allowance are also going up“; albeit not RPI’s fault, apparently.
The costs for going out of your allowance will now be £2 per day for unlimited data (previously £1), 45p per minute for calls to UK landlines and mobiles (previously 40p) and 45p per minute for the access charge for calls to 084, 087, 09 and 118 numbers (previously 36p).
The changes do not appear to affect Virgin’s pay-as-you-go tariffs and Freestyle customers will only be hit on their airtime tariff (data, minutes and texts), which means that the cost of your phone repayments will stay the same.
It’s perhaps worth pointing out that Virgin recently boosted the Mobile Broadband data allowances for some of their monthly tariffs and have also dropped the cost of EU roaming, although all operators have recently had to do the latter due to new regulation. Still if anybody isn’t happy then Virgin says you can call 789 from your Virgin mobile phone by 30th June 2016 to change your tariff or cancel your contract without penalty.
