ISP Hyperoptic, which is rolling out their 1Gbps (Gigabit per second) capable Fibre-to-the-Building (FTTP/B) broadband network to around 500,000 UK homes and offices in 20 cities across the United Kingdom, has today launched a cheaper package that’s specifically targeted at students.
Apparently for the new deal Hyperoptic have taken their service, reduced the price, stripped the phone line and waived both the set-up and cancellation fees. As a result students will only pay £15 per month for their 20Mbps service, £25 for 100Mbps or £45 for 1000Mbps. Customers just need to enter the promo code FLATSHARE during sign-up online or call 0333 332 1111.
However the catch is that this pricing is only applicable during the “first 12 months of continuous service“, which could be a problem since students tend to desire a 9 month contract term (they don’t usually spend 12 continuous months at their temporary accommodation).
The other issue is one of coverage and it’s not clear how many of the premises being reached by Hyperoptic are actually being used by students. The ISP’s network tends to focus on connecting big apartment buildings (Multi-Dwelling-Units) or office blocks.
At present Hyperoptic’s fibre optic network can be found in parts of London, Birmingham, Glasgow, Cardiff, Bristol, Reading, Manchester, Leeds, Liverpool, Sheffield, Birmingham, Newcastle and Brighton. On top of that they’re also beginning work to roll-out in Portsmouth, Watford, Leicester, Southampton, Slough, Edinburgh and Woking.
