Virgin Media (Liberty Global) has today announced that the city of Coventry in the West Midlands (England) will be the next to benefit from the on-going expansion of their TV and 300Mbps capable ultrafast broadband and TV network, with 30,000 additional homes and businesses set to be covered.
Overall Virgin Media’s £3bn Project Lightning will reach a total of 17 million premises across the United Kingdom by 2019, which reflects an extra 4 million premises (50% of via FTTP fibre optic technology and 50% via HFC DOCSIS) than it had at the start of 2015. This should boost their national coverage to around 60-65%.
Apparently work on the expansion in Coventry has already begun and is expected to be completed before the end 2017.
Dr. Jo Dutton, VM’s Regional Director for the Midlands and East, said:
“It’s official – Coventry has struck broadband and entertainment gold! Residents will soon be getting the high-speed connectivity and top-notch TV they deserve. We urge residents to come together and register their interest – your street could be next.”
The news today that the Government will introduce a 5 year relief on business rates for new fibre optic broadband investments, which should be introduced from April 2017, is certain to deliver a big boost for Virgin Media. Indeed we are anticipating that the operator may now improve their current targets and extend even further.
