The rural Norfolk (England) community of Barton Turf and its surrounding villages can now gain access to a faster broadband connection after WiSpire expanded their fixed wireless access network to the area, which was done by installing their kit on top of the local St Michael & All Angels church.
In a statement WiSpire said, “With broadband connectivity, a priority for rural Norfolk, this additional capacity provides greater resilience in the WiSpire network allowing the company to support a larger number of customers with their range of broadband services.”
Apparently residents are being offer access to broadband speeds of ‘up to’ only 10Mbps, which suggests that the local network doesn’t yet have enough capacity to support their top “superfast” package speeds of up to 30Mbps. Mind you that’s still better than the 1-3Mbps that locals currently struggle to achieve via Openreach’s (BT) older copper ADSL lines.
The area is also so remote that it should be able to benefit from Broadband Delivery UK programme’s USC subsidy scheme, which allows locals to take an unlimited 10Mbps (1Mbps upload) package for the reduced price of just £22 per month (+£50 one-off connection fee) on a 12 month contract. Obviously no land-line is required for this.
