Boundless Networks Boosts its UK Wireless Broadband Speeds to 50Mbps

Wednesday, Jun 14th, 2017 (12:12 pm) - Score 1,032

Fixed wireless ISP Boundless Networks, which serves a growing number of homes and businesses with superfast broadband services around rural parts of the United Kingdom, has doubled its network capacity and boosted their top package speeds up to 50Mbps.

Overall the upgrade meant that more than 300 of the ISP’s 550 Access Points needed to be upgraded with the latest Cambium Networks ePMP Elevate solution, which means that all of the provider’s base stations are now able to handle double their previous capacity. In keeping with that, a performance improving software upgrade was also applied to thousands of subscribers Over-The-Air (OTA).

The upgrade helps to enhance the network’s ageing 802.11n based WiFi kit, which would otherwise have had to undergo costly and disruptive hardware upgrades. Instead ePMP Elevate is installed on subscriber modules from other manufacturers already in the network and those are then connected to Cambium’s base station, adding useful features to 802.11n-based equipment (e.g. frequency reuse enabled by GPS Synchronization, Airtime Fairness and Smart Beamforming). Clever stuff.

David Burns, CEO of Boundless, said:

“Cambium’s ePMP Elevate platform arrived at the perfect time for Boundless, as it promised to solve three problems in one; speed, spectrum and service. As our customers’ expectations for bandwidth and service level rose and our success in high-demand areas decreased spectrum availability, we were faced with a significant business challenge to deliver better service and higher performance in crowded airspace, without making the huge investment of replacing every access point and customer radio.

As a result of the upgrade, our customers are getting more consistent service delivery, making streaming and Voice-over-IP (VoIP) far more realistic. We can bring speeds to rural locations that are better than the UK average speeds in large cities, making our proposition more compelling than ever. All in all, we have been delighted to see that Cambium’s claims are true and we have seen no ‘down-side’ to this migration so far.”

At present there’s no sign of a new 50Mbps package on the Boundless website, with their top residential package offering unlimited (Fair Usage Policy) download speeds of up to 30Mbps (10Mbps upload) for £30 per month on a 12 month contract. A one-off installation charge of £150 also applies.
