Telecoms and broadband giant BT (EE) has today launched a new multi-million-pound Narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) network, which is a low-power and long-range fixed wireless network that claims to cover 97% of the UK’s “outdoor population” (not geography) and will be used to connect sensors or other smart IoT devices.

The UK Government’s £5bn Project Gigabit broadband rollout scheme has today awarded the local £16.6m (state aid) contract for East Gloucestershire in England to ISP Gigaclear, which will aim to extend their full fibre network to around 4,400 additional premises in hard-to-reach rural areas.

The UK’s independent public spending watchdog, the National Audit Office (NAO), has today published a new report into £1bn industry-led Shared Rural Network project (i.e. extending 4G mobile / broadband cover to 95% of the UK by the end of 2025), which finds that it’s “behind schedule” and at risk of cost overruns.

The Government’s £5bn Project Gigabit broadband rollout scheme has today awarded the £60m (state aid) regional contract for West Yorkshire, parts of North Yorkshire and East Riding in England to UK ISP Quickline, which will aim to extend their full fibre network to “around” 28,000 additional premises in hard to reach rural areas.

The UK Government has announced that public subsidy via both the past c.£2.54bn Superfast Broadband (SFBB) and current £5bn Project Gigabit roll-out schemes has, since August 2012, helped to expand gigabit-speed network coverage to 1,006,800 additional homes and businesses. A number of new satellite “Alpha Trials” have also launched.

Broadband provider Connexin, which is busy deploying a new 10Gbps capable full fibre (FTTP) network across parts of Hull, East Lincolnshire and Yorkshire in England, has introduced a new-ish argument into the debate over wood poles by highlighting how using them is “less carbon intensive than digging ducts.” But we suspect it won’t sway the refuseniks.

A new type of mobile SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) card is being launched today – supported by Deutsche Telekom and Tele2 – called resilient SIM (rSIM), which can effectively upgrade a single SIM device to Dual-SIM by automatically switching between the two in case of any network issues, minimising the impact of a lost connection.

Mobile operator Vodafone UK, which last year began work to deploy Open Radio Access Network kit to 2,500 sites across mostly rural parts of Wales and the South West England by 2027 (here), has successfully deployed NEC’s Massive MIMO (mMIMO) technology to one of their live 5G (mobile broadband) capable O-RAN sites.

National telecoms and broadband giant BT Group has this morning announced the sale of their iconic BT Tower building in London, which is a grade II listed communications tower located in Fitzrovia, to MCR Hotels for £275 million. The new owner plans to preserve the tower, albeit now serving as an “iconic hotel“.

Some of UK ISP Virgin Media’s (VMO2) existing broadband customers in nexfibre areas have complained that, due to confusion within the provider’s support team, they’ve struggled to add the new +£6 per month symmetric speed boost to their package, which was recently launched alongside the new 2Gbps plan (here).

Hampshire-based UK ISP toob, which is deploying its own Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across parts of South England, has today suffered a second major broadband outage in the space of a week after customers reported losing connectivity at around 11am today. The first outage similarly occurred on a Tuesday (here) last week.

The industry-led One Touch Switching Company (TOTSCo) has signed a strategic partnership with Indian firm Tech Mahindra to design, build and operate a message exchange platform for the UK telecom industry, which will underpin the much delayed One Touch Switch (OTS) system for easier and quicker consumer switching between ISPs.

Finnish technology firm Nokia, which supplies network kit to a number of UK broadband and mobile operators (EE, O2 etc.), has launched a new power saving mode called “extreme deep sleep” that it estimates could reduce power consumption on their radio kit in mobile networks by a factor of eight.

Mobile operator EE (BT) has announced that they’ve upgraded or built more than 40 mobile masts in North Yorkshire (England) over the last two years, which is part of their commitment to expand rural 4G (mobile broadband) connectivity under the £1bn industry-led Shared Rural Network (SRN) project.
