Mobile network analyst firm Streetwave has today published the results of a new real-world benchmark, which examined the mobile operator performance of EE (BT), O2 (Virgin Media), Vodafone and Three UK across the country’s capital city of London. Suffice to say that EE came out top for mobile broadband speeds and network coverage.

Low-cost focused ISP TalkTalk has this week confirmed recent news reports by officially announcing that they’ve acquired Shell Energy’s UK broadband customer base from Octopus Energy, albeit for an as yet undisclosed sum. At the last count, Shell was believed to be hosting a total base of 480,000 internet and phone users.

A new project has claimed that “residents and businesses” across the London UK boroughs of Wandsworth, Richmond upon Thames and Merton will benefit from the rollout of a new full fibre broadband and Ethernet network, which is being supported by Boldyn Networks, the Greater London Authority (GLA) and Transport for London (TfL).

Network operator and UK ISP Connexin has today announced that they’ve secured a contract under the Government’s £5bn Project Gigabit broadband rollout programme, which will see them extend their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to 34,320 hard to reach premises in parts of Nottinghamshire and West Lincolnshire (Lot 10).

CityFibre has today secured another five of the UK government’s Project Gigabit broadband rollout contracts, totalling over £394m. The deals will spread their full fibre (FTTP) ISP network to over 202,000 hard to reach premises across parts of Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire, Berkshire, Leicestershire, Warwickshire, Sussex, Kent, Bedfordshire, Northamptonshire & Milton Keynes.

The CEO of Vodafone Group, Margherita Della Valle, has revealed that their proposed mega-merger with Three UK (CK Hutchison) is being reviewed by the Government under the National Security and Investment Act 2021, which reports suggest is linked to CKH’s perceived ties to China and any potential risks of access to sensitive national infrastructure.

Leicester-based broadband ISP Gigabit Networks has today announced that they’ve extended the availability of their full fibre (FTTP and Ethernet) services and packages, via CityFibre’s national UK network, to include the Scottish cities of Edinburgh, Glasgow and Renfrewshire for the first time.

Mobile operator and ISP Vodafone UK has just released their Q3 FY24 financial results, which saw their fixed line broadband base grow to total 1.331 million customers (up by 39k in Q3 vs 27k in the Q2), while their mobile customers grew to 18.572 million (up by 330k in Q3 vs 218k in Q2).

The new Freely platform, which is designed to be a broadband internet (streaming) based evolution that goes beyond the UK’s existing Freeview (inc. Freeview Play and Freesat) TV service, has today given a first look at some of its features and confirmed that it will officially launch in Q2 2024.

A new briefing indicates that Openreach (BT) is extending some limited exemptions to their current “stop sell” on new Wholesale Line Rental (WLR) and related broadband ISP products by one year, which means the exemptions will now be removed on 25th March 2025 instead of this year.

Some of Lit Fibre‘s customers are reporting that the provider, which is deploying a new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network across parts of England, is having to send engineers out to homes in order to fix a network outage that occurred after a software update broke some of their optical modems (ONT).

Sydney-based fabless semiconductor startup Morse Micro has successfully demonstrated how outdoor Wi-Fi signals, using their HaLow (802.11ah) chips, can be made to work at distances that are many times the reach of a conventional Wi-Fi technology. The trial saw them push a working wireless network up to 3km from its source.
