Consumer magazine Which? has today published the results from their latest annual 2021 reader survey of broadband ISP satisfaction, which saw Zen Internet come top with a reduced customer satisfaction score of 70% (down from 84%) in an otherwise problematic year, where 69% of respondents suffered connectivity problems.

Business ISP Wildcard Networks has given birth to a “full fibre” (Dark Fibre and FTTP broadband) focused sibling called Fibreconnect, which is the operator’s consumer-facing brand. Both sides of the business are now building networks around Newcastle and, on top of that, they’re about to hop on Cityfibre’s platform.

Mobile operator Smarty has this week announced that they’ve refreshed their range of SIM-Only mobile plans by giving them all bigger data allowances (mobile broadband) and often for no extra cost. For example, their entry-level plan previously only included 1GB (GigaByte) of data for £6 per month, but you’ll now get 4GB for that.

The UK Government has today revealed new details of how their £5bn gigabit broadband roll-out scheme will work and rebranded it as “Project Gigabit“. As part of that they’ve also confirmed £210m for an extension of their rural Gigabit Voucher scheme and £110m to connect up to 7,000 rural GP surgeries, libraries and schools.

The Government’s Building Digital UK team has today begun a new consultation to help them identify what existing or planned commercial gigabit-capable broadband coverage exists in Essex (England), which will help to establish the areas where public investment may be needed to deploy the service.

CityFibre UK has reached a new partnership with landlord and housing developer Thirteen Group, which thanks to a blanket wayleave agreement will ensure that 12,500 of their customers in Middlesbrough (North Yorkshire, England) can gain access to a 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network.

The Scottish Government‘s Connectivity Minister, Paul Wheelhouse, has given a progress update on their £579m Reaching 100% (R100) project, which is extending “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) to the final 5-6% of poorly served premises (mostly via FTTP). The main focus was on voucher delays and the LOT 1 (Highlands) contract.

Broadband ISP Zen Internet has published a brief summary of internet traffic trends on their network for the past year (March 2020 to March 2021), since the first COVID-19 lockdown, which found that internet usage in the United Kingdom had increased by 78% year-on-year.

Ofcom has today published the outcome of their Wholesale Fixed Telecoms Market Review 2021-26 (FTMR), which sets out how various changes (Dark Fibre Access, copper retirement, regulation that varies by geographic area etc.) will be used to boost UK investment in “full fibre” broadband and high capacity Ethernet services.

Swedish operator VXFIBER (inc. subsidiary LilaConnect) will today announce the start of their multi-million pound project to deploy a new Dark Fibre and gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network across the large town of Colchester in Essex (England), which aims to cover c.25,000 premises.

CityFibre UK has today announced that they’re investing £30m to support the rollout of a new 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network to homes and businesses in the Dorset towns of Poole and Christchurch, which will complement their existing deployment in the neighbouring city of Bournemouth.

Ofcom has today revealed the winners from the “principal stage” of their latest 5G focused mobile (mobile broadband) spectrum auction for the 700MHz and 3.6-3.8GHz bands, which saw operators spend a total of £1.356 billion across the various bands and EE (BT) appears to have gobbled up the most (£452m).
