Mobile operator Three UK has this morning published their annual financial results, which reveals that over 4,700 sites (up from 4,250 last year) across 650 towns and cities are now live with 5G and the average data (mobile broadband) usage per customer has reached 30 GigaBytes per month (up by 19.52% from 25.1GB).

A new survey of residents in housing schemes across Hastings (East Sussex), which was jointly conducted by altnet ISP Lightning Fibre, the Orbit Housing Association and the Complete Technology Group, has revealed a “stark lack of awareness” of what full fibre broadband is (51% had little to no understanding and 87% of residents wanted to learn more about it).

The annual Broadband Genie 2024 Awards survey has just named UK ISP YouFibre, which harnesses Netomnia’s growing full fibre network, as the “Best Provider” of the year, while a variety of other internet service providers also scooped various other awards across several different categories.

The FTTH Council Europe has today published their 2024 ranking of 39 European countries (EU39) with the strongest take-up and growth of gigabit-capable “full fibre” (FTTP/B) broadband ISP networks, which sees the UK rise several places in the ranking and a prediction that we’ll hit 29.6 million homes passed by 2029 (up from 17.1m today).

Broadband ISP Virgin Media UK (VMO2) has today announced that more than 13,000 additional homes and businesses in the Cathedral City of York (North Yorkshire, England) can now access their new 2Gbps speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network, which was made possible by nexfibre’s network expansion.

Broadband operator Netomnia (YouFibre) has revealed that their 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network, which recently covered 850,000 UK premises (up from 730k in Nov 2023), is currently planned to reach 1.5 million premises next year. But they also hold a tentative ambition to push that up to 2 million by the end of 2025.

Vodafone has reaffirmed its commitment to providing 5G Standalone (5GSA) tech to nearly 90% of Scotland’s landmass by 2034 as a result of its proposed merger with Three UK. The operator also commits to exceeding the UK Government’s Shared Rural Network target of bringing 4G to 74% of Scotland’s geography by pushing it to over 89% by 2027.

The Scottish Government and the Building Digital UK (BDUK) agency have quietly revealed that they intend to publish the first official contract notice for the Project Gigabit broadband rollout scheme in Scotland, starting this month. Some £450m has already been allocated (here) to help this project spread 1Gbps speeds across rural Scotland.

A partnership between BTWholesale and broadband ISP Barclay Communications has resulted in the launch of a new £6 million scheme, which will see the internet and telecoms provider offering a “Free Ultra-Fast Fibre” (FTTP) connection to businesses in Northern Ireland.

A new study from Global Wireless Solutions (GWS) claims to have found that the UK’s major mobile operators are currently delivering mobile broadband (4G and 5G) speeds that “satisfy the majority of mobile users” and, apparently, the “sweet spot” for most Apps is said to be between just 1-5Mbps. But this does require some context.

Broadband ISP Connexin has today responded angrily to KCOM’s move last week to send them a feasibility study on infrastructure sharing (PIA / cable duct and pole access) in the Hull area of East Yorkshire (here), which it was hoped might have reduced the level of new pole deployments for full fibre networks. But instead they’ve been left “disappointed“.

Mobile network analyst firm Streetwave and train operator c2c have today published the results of a new real-world benchmark, which examined the mobile network (2G to 5G) performance of EE (BT), O2 (Virgin Media), Vodafone and Three UK across the Essex Thameside Railway route. Overall, EE customers get the best experience.
