Gig-ability engineer points at telecoms pole for FTTP - PR 080424

The relatively new alternative broadband ISP Gig-ability, which we first wrote about in January 2024 (here), has announced that they’ve started the first build phase of their plan to deploy a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across poorly served rural villages in Shropshire (England).

Comparison site Broadband Genie has today published a new 2024 Mobile Data Affordability Index, which explores the global landscape of mobile data (mobile broadband) pricing and affordability. Overall, the United Kingdom was found to rank 5th most affordable for mobile data out of 179 countries, putting it ahead of “global powerhouses” such as Germany (13th), Italy (20th), the USA (35th) and China (51st).

Openreach (BT) recently issued a short update on the progress they’ve been making in upgrading all of their 30,000+ strong fleet of UK diesel powered vans and cars to electric (EV) by March 2031, which reveals that they’ve just welcomed their 4,000th Electric Vehicle (up from 3,000 in January 2024).

Broadband ISP Virgin Media (VMO2) has today restarted their Digital Landline Switchover programme (i.e. migrating old analogue landline phones to IP-based services), which was paused at the end of 2023 as part of their commitment under a Government-led charter that is designed to limit risks for vulnerable users. But changes are afoot.

Low-cost mobile operator iD Mobile (Currys), which harnesses Three UK’s national 4G and 5G network via a virtual operator (MVNO) partnership, could be sold. The news came after one of Currys’ top investors, JO Hambro, encouraged the consume electronics retailer to sell the operator (valued at c.£350m) to help resolve its current difficulties.

Broadband ISP Virgin Media (VMO2) has today begun rolling out a new service called “Smart Support” to a sizeable but limited subset of their customer base, which they say will help to “boost broadband reliability” by proactively identifying and tackling issues remotely at no extra cost for customers.

The new generation of alternative gigabit-capable broadband ISP networks (AltNets) has helped to bring a huge amount of additional competition into the wider UK market. But one area where some of them fall down is in their use of technologies like CGNAT (IP address sharing) and the lack of IPv6 support.

The rural south Shropshire (England) village of Ditton Priors, which is home to over 800 people, can now access a gigabit-capable broadband network after a combination of Project Gigabit vouchers, council support and work by ISP Kloud9 enabled the roll-out of a new full fibre (FTTP) network to take place.

In a victory for some full fibre ISPs. The government’s Building Digital UK (BDUK) agency appears to have reversed an earlier decision, which removed gigabit broadband voucher eligibility for some properties (UPRNs) that had previously received public subsidy through the earlier Superfast (24-30Mbps+) scheme, when delivering fixed wireless access (FWA) networks.

Rochdale-based UK ISP Zen Internet has informed ISPreview that they’ve passed an important milestone after their broadband subscriber (circuit) base surpassed the 200,810 mark, which represents an increase of 14,810 on the total of 186,000 that was published in their last annual accounts to the end of September 2022.

The UK Internet Service Providers Association (ISPA) has conducted a new Censuswide survey of 2,563 UK respondents to assess public attitude towards using poles for overhead full fibre broadband delivery, which found that 75% of respondents “clearly recognise the benefits of having access to faster and more reliable broadband even if that is delivered via poles.”

Network operator Freedom Fibre, which has deployed a gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to cover 300,000 UK premises (27th Mar 2024) – mostly in the North West of England, is extending their “Freedom Fund” to North Shropshire in England from 5th April 2024 and has allocated £25,000 for distribution.

Broadband ISP and UK mobile operator EE (BT) has announced that they’ve boosted their 4G mobile coverage in the Welsh county of Ceredigion by upgrading services at over 10 mobile masts. The work forms part of more than 150 other locations across Wales where EE has expanded 4G under the £1bn industry-led Shared Rural Network (SRN) programme.

Edinburgh-based UK business ISP Commsworld has today launched a new and more “cost effective” business-grade broadband service using Ethernet over Fibre to the Premises (EoFTTP) technology, which they say can provide “minimum bandwidth assurances as well as rapid repair times in the event of a fault.”
