From today anybody choosing to use their Mobile phone (SIM) to make calls, text or use data (Mobile Broadband) while roaming around the European Union should be able to do so for the same price as they pay their UK operator (i.e. no extra roaming charges), albeit with a few caveats for data.

Consumer magazine Which? has published the outcome from their first 2017 consumer survey of Mobile Network Operators (MNO), which ranked Giffgaff top with a customer score of 81%. Sadly Vodafone and EE could both be found languishing at the bottom of the table on 50% (tied).

A new survey of 1,465 UK businesses by the British Chambers of Commerce has found that 70% of firms have suffered Mobile “not spots” (no signal) or “partial not-spots” (basic cover via only some networks), while 91% of those who suffered such issues are rural based (falls to 56% for urban firms).

Mobile operator O2 has today become the latest to confirm that existing subscribers will, effective from 15th June 2017, be able to use their 2G, 3G or 4G Pay Monthly, Pay As You Go and Business tariff’s inclusive calls, texts and data bundles while travelling around Europe “at no extra cost.”

Mobile operator EE (BT) has today stolen a march on the EU’s forthcoming removal of roaming charges next month by announcing that all existing Pay Monthly and pre-paid Pay As You Go (PAYG) subscribers will soon enjoy roaming to 47 European destinations “at no extra charge“.

Owners of Vodafone’s older £69 Sure Signal v3 devices, which use femtocell technology to boost indoor 3G mobile signals around your home, may be able to request a replacement after some customers reported that their kit “exploded” and “stopped with a loud band and smell of electrical burning.”

At present it’s unlawful (unless approved by a Mobile Network Operator) for consumers to use repeaters that boost and retransmit UK mobile signals, which can help indoor coverage but may also cause interference or other adverse effects for nearby customers. Ofcom now proposes to change this.

The latest ‘Global State of Mobile Networks’ report from OpenSignal, which pooled 19 billion data samples from over 1 million users and devices (e.g. Smartphones), has ranked the United Kingdom 26th fastest in the world for Mobile Broadband (3G / 4G) with an overall speed of 15.13Mbps.

Supermarket giant ASDA has today signed a revised deal with BT, which for the first time will allow their ASDA Mobile service to make use of the EE’s faster 4G network via an extension of their existing Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) agreement.

The Senior Product Manager for TV at TalkTalk, Davide Turi, has revealed that broadband ISP TalkTalk is working on a “completely new” TV product that appears to be aimed at mobile devices (Smartphones, Tablets etc.). Turi recently joined the ISP after working at Sky on their Sky Q TV platform.

Mobile operator Vodafone has today enabled the first community hub to receive an indoor 3G signal boost via their new Community Indoor Sure Signal (CISS) programme, which eventually hopes to improve the indoor mobile signals for 100 rural community hubs across the United Kingdom.
