The national telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has confirmed that they’ve opened a preliminary investigation into a 4G mobile network outage that struck part of EE UK’s (BT) platform on 21st May 2019, which may have left some customers unable to contact the emergency services.

Over the past few months all of the three major UK mobile network operators – EE (BT), Vodafone and O2 – have joined Three UK in offering 4G or 5G pay monthly mobile data (mobile broadband) plans with “unlimited” allowances. We take a quick look at what you can get (SIM-Only) for your money and some of the caveats.

Mobile operator Three UK has today pledged that existing customers can expect “performance improvements” (i.e. faster mobile broadband speeds) of up to 150% as part of a major upgrade, which will see them both rollout L-Band (1.4GHz) technology to boost 4G and switch some of their 3G spectrum to 4G.

Ofcom has published a Summer 2019 update to their Connected Nations report, which reveals that “full fibre” (FTTP) UK broadband coverage has risen to 8% (up from 7% four months ago) and the number of premises unable to get 10Mbps+ has declined from 619,000 to 578,000. Geographic 4G mobile cover remains at 66%.

After Three UK led the way, followed by Vodafone, then EE and today mobile operator O2 has become the last of the major UK providers to launch its own “Unlimited Data” (mobile broadband) tariffs for 4G and future 5G customers, which are available on both their Custom Plans and SIM-only contracts from £33 a month.

Crowdsourced data analysis firm Tutela has today published the results of their Global Mobile Experience Report, which ranks 167 countries by measuring the quality of their 3G and 4G based mobile networks (e.g. O2, Three UK, EE and Vodafone). Overall the United Kingdom placed just 36th.

Crowdsourced data analysis firm Tutela has today published their annual 2019 State of Mobile Networks report for the United Kingdom, which among other things found that you’ll get the fastest 3G and 4G mobile broadband download speeds in Scotland (median average of 14.6Mbps). Overall EE delivered the best operator scores.

Some customers of Virgin Media’s mobile network sibling – Virgin Mobile – are being affected by a batch of faulty purple SIM cards that for the past few weeks have been causing intermittent connectivity problems. The situation has even hit some of the replacement SIMs that were sent out in order to resolve the original problem.

A new UK Government funded project called NoServiceHere is hoping, among other things, to harness the power of the Twitter community in order to help identify areas (rural and urban) of poor mobile signal by curating geospatial data, which can then be used to help focus the rollout of 3G, 4G and future 5G networks.

A new survey of 2,000 mobile phone using UK adults, which was conducted by Global Wireless Solutions and OnePoll, has claimed that 11% of respondents felt their experience in a restaurant had “been ruined due to poor mobile connectivity.” Meanwhile EE and O2 offered the most reliable service while inside such eateries.

RootMetrics will today publish their latest H1 2019 study of 4G mobile network performance in the United Kingdom, which once again concluded that EE (BT) is overall still the top performing operator and also delivered the fastest aggregate mobile broadband download speed in UK-wide testing (37.6Mbps). Sadly O2 remains at the bottom.

Crowd-sourced analyst firm Opensignal has tested the Mobile Broadband speeds experienced by the three largest Smartphone makers (by shipment volume) across 73 countries – Apple, Huawei and Samsung – and concluded that Samsung users experienced faster download speeds. But the wider picture is more complicated.

Mobile operator Three UK has today released their latest results to the end of June 2019 (H1 19 financial), which amongst other things revealed that monthly Mobile Broadband (3G / 4G) data usage per customer grew from 8.3GB (GigaBytes) last quarter to 9.1GB now. Plus they plan a rollout of L-Band technology to boost 4G.

Nominet has published the results of new poll, which queried 2,080 UK adults about their home internet connectivity (i.e. attitudes to broadband ISP, WiFi and mobile reliability). Overall 60% of respondents would opt for reliability over speed and 79% said they had experienced broadband reliability problems in the last year.

Customers of BT’s (EE) retail fixed line broadband ISP business (around 9.4 million of them) hit a new record level of internet data traffic after the network peaked at around 13Tbps (Terabits per second) in March, which is up from 10.4Tbps at roughly the same time last year. By comparison their mobile broadband network hit 0.4Tbps.

The UK communications and media (broadband, mobile, TV etc.) regulator has today set out a range of new measures that are intended to tackle bundles of both mobile handsets and tariffs (airtime contracts) together, which often continue to charge consumers for the handset even once the minimum contract term has ended.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today proposed to make a “slight change” to the technical parameters allowed for licence exempt use of in-vehicle low gain mobile phone repeaters (aka – signal boosters / signal enhancers), which in theory could help to improve mobile reception inside vehicles.
