The Director-General of the BBC, Tim Davie, has given broadband ISPs and mobile operators something extra to think about after he proposed that the corporation could plan to “switch-off” terrestrial TV and radio signals by the end of 2030. In their place, the broadcaster would focus on online content and streaming (e.g. iPlayer).

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today issued an update on its position with respect to whether the upper 6GHz radio spectrum band (6425 to 7125MHz) should be released for use by either higher-power licensed 5G mobile networks (mobile broadband) or lower-power Wi-Fi (e.g. home WiFi).

Mobile network operator and broadband ISP Vodafone UK – supported by partnerships with Dell, Intel, Samsung, Wind River, and Capgemini – has today announced that they’ve achieved another “European first” by rolling out 4G and 5G OpenRAN (O-RAN) technology to 16 mobile masts in urban parts of Devon (England).

Mobile operator O2 (VMO2) has announced that it is supplying all Big Issue (magazine) vendors with free mobile SIMs and “data vouchers“, which represents an improvement from last year when they gave over 200 Big Issue vendors free data plans, enabling them to take contactless payments (52% of magazine sales are via contactless).

The UK Government’s new Product Security and Telecommunications Infrastructure Bill (PSTI) is finally set to become law after passing through both houses of parliament this week. The new law will, among other things, make it easier for full fibre broadband and mobile operators to upgrade, share and deploy new infrastructure.

The plight of residents and businesses around the remote rural community of Uig on the west coast of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides (Scotland), which was left without access to 4G for calls and mobile broadband after a fault impacted EE UK’s local mast, has reached the Scottish Parliament.

A new National Connectivity Alliance (the NCA) has been launch today, which for the first time brings together UK telecommunications providers (mobile and broadband), infrastructure providers, landowners and their professional advisers. The goal is to collaborate on areas of mutual interest and that may boost the rollout of new networks.

The Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) project in England has received a further £250,000 of funding in order to extend their Mobile Boost Scheme, which works to improve rural 4G mobile (mobile broadband and voice) availability by offering vouchers (up to £1,200) to help deploy indoor mobile signal boosters.

Residents and businesses on EE’s mobile network in the area surrounding the tiny rural hamlet and civil parish of Leaveland in Kent (England) have complained after a fault with the operator’s local mast left them without a working 4G connection, as well as a poor signal in other areas (via other masts), for two weeks and counting.

Mobile network operator giffgaff has today announced that it will shortly introduce a range of new SIM-Only “goodybag” plans and, at the same time, it will also boost mobile data allowances across most of their existing plans too. The changes are due to be introduced from 7th December 2022.

Mobile network operator EE (BT) has today become only the second such provider after VOXI (Vodafone) to launch a low-cost social tariff – EE Basics – for mobile customers on Universal Credit and a range of other means-tested benefits. But some commercial 4G and 5G plans from rivals will give you more for your money.

AST SpaceMobile, which is backed by Vodafone and various other global mobile operators, has successfully completed the deployment of a huge 693-square-foot (64.4-square-meter) phased array antenna on their prototype BlueWalker 3 LEO satellite. The platform will be used to test a new space-based 4G and 5G cellular broadband network.

Vodafone UK has this morning published their latest Q2 FY23 results, which reveals that their fixed broadband ISP base grew again to total 1.111 million customers (up sharply by 39k in the quarter vs 22k in Q1 FY23) and their mobile base also surged again to total 17.543 million (up by 321k vs 115k in the previous quarter).

Mobile operator 1p Mobile has recently introduced a couple of new Pay Monthly plans to complement their usual Pay As You Go (PAYG) offerings, which will now bundle in up to 200GB (GigaBytes) of monthly data (mobile broadband) alongside the usual pledges of “no contract“, “no credit checks” and unlimited calls / texts.

Ambition North Wales, which is a partnership comprising the six Local Authorities in the region and several Universities, has worked with UK consultancy firm FarrPoint to conduct a survey that measured 4G mobile (mobile broadband) coverage across the region’s main transport routes. Suffice to say, there are some problem areas.

The wholesale division of ISP BT (BT Wholesale), which sells broadband and other services to a large number of UK providers, has announced that they’re going to make EE’s connectivity available to enterprises and resellers on a direct, wholesale basis for the first time, through their mobile SIMs.

UK ISP BT has issued the latest biannual October 2022 update on the progress they’ve made in delivering the 10Mbps Universal Service Obligation (USO) for broadband, which confirms that they’ve so far built a USO connection to over 5,900 premises (up from 4,600), with more than 2,000 further builds in progress (down from 2,300).
