Mobile operator giffgaff has today announced that, in order to help ease the burden of rising costs, they’ve taken the decision to FREEZE all UK tariffs for the rest of 2022. Members are also free to leave the provider whenever they choose, without being financially penalised.

Mobile operator Vodafone UK will tomorrow enhance their Pay As You Go (PAYG) plans (i.e. Big Value Bundles) by doubling the amount of mobile broadband data that you can get and at “no additional cost“. Existing PAYG customers will also benefit from the increased data allowance, which will be “automatically updated for them“.

The two sides of VMO2 – O2 and Virgin Media – have today issued somewhat of a progress update on their various fixed broadband and mobile deployments across Wales, which among others things reveals that they’ve boosted 4G network capacity in 5,800 postcodes during 2021 and 412,000 premises can now get gigabit speeds.

The Government has today announced the proposed launch of a new body called the ‘UK Telecoms Innovation Network‘ (UKTIN), which will help to guide mobile network operators and broadband ISPs that seek funding for key telecoms related research and development projects (e.g. OpenRAN technologies).

The Scottish Government’s £28.75m 4G Infill Programme (S4GI), which via WHP Telecoms aims to improve rural mobile voice and broadband coverage by building new masts (mostly tackling notspots across the Highlands and Islands), has given a progress update to confirm that 27 out of the 55 planned masts have gone live.

A new provider called XtndNet claims to have launched a new ISP network for serving “forgotten broadband customers” in remote rural parts of the UK, which adopts a “hybrid” approach that combines mobile broadband (4G / 5G) with fixed line ADSL and satellite connectivity in order to offer “typical” download speeds of 25Mbps.

Mobile operator Three UK has today revealed that the average 4G and 5G data usage (mobile broadband), per customer, per month on their network jumped to 19GB (GigaBytes) in Dec 2021, which is up from 15.8GB a year ago. Ookla (Speedtest.net) also found that they delivered the fastest 5G download speeds in Q3-Q4 2021.

New data from crowdsourced mobile benchmarking firm Opensignal has compared how the 4G and 5G based UK mobile broadband download and upload speeds compared across Apple’s various iPhone generations (up to the iPhone 13). Unsurprisingly, the latest 5G equipped iPhone 12 and 13 delivered significantly faster performance.

Mobile operator Three UK has confirmed to ISPreview.co.uk that, after years of waiting and more than a few false starts (here), they will finally aim to launch eSIM support for 4G and 5G devices during Q2 2022, starting with the Apple Watch during the same period (other handsets will follow).

Mobile operator Vodafone has today named some of the first rural towns in the UK to benefit from their planned rollout of 4G and 5G OpenRAN (O-RAN) technology, which is set to reach a total of 2,500 sites by the end of 2027 (here). The named communities have “traditionally struggled to receive good quality … mobile coverage“.

Mobile operator EE (BT) has today announced that they’ve deployed 200 units of a new type of small cell (tiny base stations) on UK street furniture and buildings in order to boost the coverage and speed of their 4G based (mobile broadband) network, which they claim allows “customers to benefit from download speeds up to 300Mbps.”

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today proposed to make the upper 6GHz radio spectrum band (6425-7070MHz) available to Shared Access Licences for low-power, indoor use. But the move raises questions over the future use of this band to help improve 5G and WiFi performance, which has not yet been ruled out.

The Fastershire broadband project is starting to make a new Digital Household Grant (DHG) available to homes in some rural parts of South Herefordshire (i.e. those that were originally due to receive FTTP broadband via UK ISP Gigaclear), which will enable them to help cover the installation cost of an “interim broadband solution.”

The Government has today launched a new consultation, which sets out their proposed legal instruments to control the use of Huawei’s telecoms equipment in UK networks. The move reflects both their BAN on the company’s kit for ultrafast 5G mobile platforms and related restrictions in gigabit broadband ISP networks etc.
