A new study from crowdsourced mobile benchmarking firm Opensignal has examined how mobile broadband download speeds have changed, across 100 countries, since 5G networks were introduced. For example, average 4G and 5G download speeds in the UK were 39.7Mbps at the end of 2021, up from 21.7Mbps at the start of 2019.

Technical UK consultancy firm FarrPoint has just created something rather special – the “first ever” independent 4G mobile (broadband) coverage map of Newcastle and South Tyneside. The study was designed to “comprehensively” map out the region’s mobile phone “not spots” in order to help the local authority to improve connectivity.

The telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today published two new discussion papers that set out their “initial thinking” on how UK mobile markets might develop and how networks may need to evolve to meet future demand. But they do not currently propose any major new regulatory interventions or new consumer pricing rules.

Mobile operator Vodafone UK has informed us of some changes they’ve made to their SIM-Only “Basics” plans from 6th and 9th February 2022, which relates to the introduction of new roaming options (costs), the removal of data capping (not quite what it sounds like) and the enabling of a spend manager.

The UK Government has today awarded £4m to support 8 new 2-year long pilots under the Digital Connectivity Infrastructure Accelerator (DCIA) project, which will test ways of making it easier for network operators to access and deploy 5G mobile (mobile broadband) infrastructure on street furniture and public buildings.

Some of EE’s UK mobile customers, specifically those who are currently roaming in the USA or Canada, have complained of being hit by massive data (mobile broadband) bills – some rising into the thousands of pounds – and of unexpected account suspensions. This is despite the users having a free roaming add-on enabled.

UK ISP and mobile operator Vodafone has today published their latest results (financial Q3 FY22), which reveals that their fixed broadband base added another +29k customers (vs +22k in the previous quarter) to make for a total base of 991,000, which should see them pass the magic million mark before their next update.

Global-focused mobile operator Truphone, which is based in London, has today signed a new 5-year agreement with BTWholesale to use their Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) services, which will enable them to harness EE’s national 4G and 5G network. But it could mean another network swap for UK customers.

A new multi-million pound data centre deal has today been signed between BT and BAI Communications, which is designed to support last year’s (here) agreement with EE and Three UK to deploy 4G and 5G based mobile (mobile broadband) services across the London Underground by late 2024 (ticket halls, platforms and tunnels).

Mobile operator EE (BT) has today announced that they’ve joined with existing network supplier Nokia to conduct one of their first UK trials of Open Radio Access Network (OpenRAN) technology in the East Yorkshire City of Hull, which they hope will “enhance [the] mobile broadband experience” for locals.

Mobile operator Vodafone UK has today announced that they will begin to retire their “legacy” 3G network from 2023 onwards. The gradual phase-out will enable them to repurpose the related radio spectrum bands to help boost the performance (faster broadband data), reliability and coverage of their existing 4G and 5G services.

Mobile operator EE has quietly confirmed that their indoor femtocell based signal booster device (‘Signal Box‘), which used an existing fixed line broadband ISP connection to create its own indoor 3G mobile signal over a specific band (e.g. 2100MHz), will be “fully closed” (for existing customers) by 30th June 2022.

Mobile testing firm RootMetrics, which was recently gobbled by Ookla (here), has today published their latest H2 2021 study of mobile network (4G and 5G) and broadband performance across the United Kingdom, which once again awards the top spot to EE (BT), with Vodafone being the runner-up.

Mobile operator Vodafone, which last year announced plans to rollout OpenRAN (O-RAN) across around 2,600 sites in rural parts of Wales and South West England by 2027 (here), has today switched-on the UK and Europe’s first live – at scale – commercial 5G and 4G deployment of the new technology in the city of Bath (Somerset).

New customers of Three UK‘s 5G powered unlimited Home Broadband service, which claims to offer “average download speeds” of 100Mbps (this will vary.. a lot), can now take the service from just £21 per month for 24-months of service (dropping to £14 on their 4G package). Various other discount options also exist.

The latest State of Rural Services report, which is being published today by Rural England CIC, has warned that many people in the country’s small towns and villages still face being “digitally excluded and locked out of key services” due to an “underinvestment in rural connectivity” (e.g. broadband and mobile infrastructure) and skills.
