The UK Government has launched a consultation on a series of proposed changes to the Electronic Communications Code (ECC), which aims to put right some of the problems caused by their last revision in 2017 and could thus make it quicker for broadband and 4G or 5G mobile operators to deploy their networks.

The £1bn Shared Rural Network (SRN) industry project made progress today after mobile operators O2, Three UK and Vodafone reached a related agreement to both build and share 222 new 4G mobile masts, which will be used to boost mobile voice and mobile broadband coverage in rural parts of the country.

A little known ISP called Haven Wireless, which helped to connect rural homes in Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire (Wales) by harnessing a mobile broadband connection from EE (BT) and other operators, is set to close on 31st March 2021 after running into “acute capacity issues on the frequencies used by the 4G masts covering our area.”

The mobile division of cable broadband, TV and phone provider Virgin Media – Virgin Mobile – appears to have started the live launch of their new ultrafast 5G based data services, albeit initially only using their new Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) platform from Vodafone rather than O2.

Maybe it was just a lot of hot air but Google (Alphabet) has announced that Loon, their long-running project that aimed to deploy mobile broadband (4G / 5G) connectivity from High Altitude Platforms (stratospheric balloons), is “winding down” as a company after they struggled to turn it into a commercial success.

Mobile operator Vodafone UK has launched a new 4G based Gigacube B818 router and several associated mobile broadband plans. The new kit is described as being a “flexible alternative to standard broadband“, which they claim will allow customers to “benefit from high-speed internet access in areas without fixed-line connectivity.”

The UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has published an ‘issues statement‘ on the proposed £31bn merger between mobile operator O2 and broadband ISP (inc. TV, phone) Virgin Media, which highlights the authority’s two main concerns – the risk of higher consumer prices and worse 5G connectivity for rivals.

Mobile operator giffgaff has announced that they will soon be boosting the data (mobile broadband) allowances on some of their plans and as part of that they’ll also launch two new 5G ready “golden goodybag” plans. But it’s not all good news as the operator is doubling the price of data usage on their Pay As You Go (PAYG) service.

Mobile operator Vodafone has said that they won’t be following EE’s (inc. Plusnet and BT) lead by offering free data (mobile broadband) access to BBC Bitesize (education) content during the latest COVID-19 lockdown because it is “not possible,” at least not without applying the same rule to the whole of the BBC’s UK website.

The latest biannual H2 2020 study of mobile network (4G and 5G) performance across the United Kingdom by RootMetrics has found that EE (BT) continues to be the best overall operator. On top of that they also delivered the fastest median (average) broadband download speed of 43Mbps (similar to 42.6Mbps in H1).

Mobile operator EE (BT) has announced that their offer of free unlimited data (mobile broadband) to customers who work for the National Health Service (NHS), which was due to expire on 31st January 2021, is to be extended again until June 2021 due to the on-going COVID-19 crisis.

Some customers of broadband ISP Virgin Media are being offered a set of freebies to help keep them connected and entertained during the latest COVID-19 lockdown, which covers a range of things from the addition of extra Pay TV and on-demand content (at no extra cost) to free mobile data, minutes and texts.

Mobile customers of BT, Plusnet and EE have today been told that the operators will remove mobile data (mobile broadband) charges for BBC Bitesize content by the end of January 2021. The move forms part of BT’s new “Lockdown Learning” scheme (here), which was kicked off last week to help struggling school children.

In an unsurprising development, mobile operators O2 (Telefonica) and Vodafone, which have a 50:50 network sharing agreement via Cornerstone (CTIL), have today moved to jointly commercialise their existing UK mast and tower sites as part of a new long-term Master Services Agreement (MSA).

Mobile operator O2 (Telefonica UK) has informed ISPreview.co.uk that, after a long wait, they intend to join the other primary operators by adding the ability to send and receive text (SMS) messages via Wi-Fi Calling, which they’re aiming to introduce “later this year.”

A couple of days ago BT and EE pledged to help support children’s education in the UK during the COVID-19 lockdown by giving 20GB of free mobile data (mobile broadband) per month to “disadvantaged families” (here), but now they’ve decided to boost this to “unlimited” and there’s more..

BT (EE) has confirmed that, in response to calls for UK mobile broadband operators to help support children’s education during the new COVID-19 lockdown, they too will be joining other operators (here) and the Department of Education by supplying 20GB of free extra mobile data per month to “disadvantaged families.”
