In an unsurprising development, mobile operators O2 (Telefonica) and Vodafone, which have a 50:50 network sharing agreement via Cornerstone (CTIL), have today moved to jointly commercialise their existing UK mast and tower sites as part of a new long-term Master Services Agreement (MSA).

Mobile operator O2 (Telefonica UK) has informed ISPreview.co.uk that, after a long wait, they intend to join the other primary operators by adding the ability to send and receive text (SMS) messages via Wi-Fi Calling, which they’re aiming to introduce “later this year.”

A couple of days ago BT and EE pledged to help support children’s education in the UK during the COVID-19 lockdown by giving 20GB of free mobile data (mobile broadband) per month to “disadvantaged families” (here), but now they’ve decided to boost this to “unlimited” and there’s more..

BT (EE) has confirmed that, in response to calls for UK mobile broadband operators to help support children’s education during the new COVID-19 lockdown, they too will be joining other operators (here) and the Department of Education by supplying 20GB of free extra mobile data per month to “disadvantaged families.”

Mobile operator Three UK appears to have followed Vodafone’s lead today by announcing that they will provide unlimited data (mobile broadband) upgrades to disadvantaged school children in England, which they hope will enable them to continue their studies during the latest COVID-19 lockdown.

It’s been a long.. time coming, but Vodafone has now confirmed to ISPreview.co.uk that they’ve finally started to add the ability to send and receive text (SMS) messages via Wi-Fi Calling, which is important news for those who no longer have the option of using a femtocell based Sure Signal (3G) router. Just O2 left to go.

Mobile operator Three UK appears to have “put a short pause” on eSIM support after first adding it to their network (4G and 5G) for mobile handsets (NOT Smart Watches.. yet) in late September 2020 (here), although the eSIM Support and Activation page on their website does a poor job of communicating this.

As expected all four of the UK’s primary mobile network operators, including Three UK, Vodafone, O2 and EE (BT), have now confirmed that they have “no plans” (yet) to remove free roaming when the UK fully leaves the European Union on Thursday 31st December 2020 this week.

As usual we’re ending 2020 by taking a quick look back over the year to see how average download and upload speeds have changed across the top national fixed line home broadband ISPs and mobile network operators. Predictably, the rising take-up of faster connections has resulted in a general improvement.

Mobile operator EE (BT) has revealed that their 4G based mobile network now covers 94% of all roads in Great Britain, which is said to be the equivalent of 322,000 miles. The news comes after Ofcom revealed (here) that EE had the strongest UK 4G geographic (landmass) coverage of 85%, but this is up just 1% from last year.

Mobile operator Three UK has today revealed that the average 4G and 5G data usage (mobile broadband), per customer, per month on their network smashed the 15GB (GigaBytes) barrier for the first time in October 2020 – this is said to reflect a 50% increase in data usage since the start of 2020 (10 months).

New customers of BT’s Consumer UK broadband ISP division, specifically those who use their availability checker and are not covered by either their FTTC or FTTP based “fibre” service, are now being given the option of taking a new “4G Home Broadband” service with “maximum” speeds of either 15Mbps or 30Mbps.

Contract-free UK mobile operator VOXI, which is a sibling of Vodafone, have today said they’re offering customers over “96,000 freebies” this Christmas as part of their reward scheme, which includes everything from £50 Just Eat vouchers, to a Sony 50 inch Smart TV and even a Fiat 500 Hybrid car.

Broadband and mobile giant BT has today announced that they will lead a new Government backed consortium as part of ‘Project XCelerate‘, which seeks to establish the UK’s first commercial drone corridor in open and unrestricted airspace (i.e. enabling automated drones and manned aviation to safely co-exist).

The National Infrastructure Commission for Wales (NICW) has published a report that calls on the Welsh Government to “urgently establish” a Barrier Busting Taskforce to aid investment in broadband, but they also warn that “too much attention” has been paid to FTTP and “not enough” on improving Mobile Broadband (e.g. 5G).

Mobile operator EE has today announced that they’ve partnered with the Scottish Government (SG) to help deliver their £25m 4G Infill Programme, which aims to improve rural mobile voice and broadband coverage (mostly notspots across the Highlands and Islands) by building new masts for UK mobile operators to use.

Mobile operator Three UK has recently reintroduced a big discount on their top 4G and 5G SIM Only plan, which is offering unlimited data (mobile broadband), calls and texts at just £10 per month for the first six months of service (£20 thereafter). But you’ll have to sign-up for a longer 24-month term.
