Audit Scotland Map R100 Contract LOTs

A new report from Audit Scotland has provided somewhat of a summary and progress update on the Scottish Government’s £600m Reaching 100% (R100) project with BT (Openreach), which is busy extending fixed “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) coverage across rural parts of the country (mostly via FTTP).

Openreach’s (BT) Director of Corporate Affairs, Catherine Colloms, has told a UK committee for the new Product Security and Telecommunications Infrastructure Bill (PSTI) that the proposed law doesn’t do enough to help them bring gigabit broadband ISP network upgrades to large residential buildings (MDUs) and telegraph poles.

The Welsh Government (WG) has confirmed that its top-up funding for the Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme (GBVS), which offers grants to help rural homes install gigabit-capable internet connections, will end on 31st March 2022 because “budget pressures” mean they can no longer afford to continue to “underwrite the UK Government“.

The UK Government (Building Digital UK) has this evening announced the completion of the “largest public sector broadband project” in Wales, which has enabled 620 public sector sites (hospitals, police stations, libraries etc.) to get access to a lightning-fast full fibre network connection.

The Welsh Government has provided a Q4 2021 progress update on their £52.5 million Phase 2 Superfast Cymru contract with BT (Openreach), which confirms that 25,855 premises (up from 24,515 in Q3) have now gained access to the operator’s gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network.

The Government has today confirmed their intention to introduce a series of changes to Permitted Development (PD) rights for mobile infrastructure, which aims to help extend 5G and 4G (mobile broadband) coverage in rural areas of England via key changes (e.g. allowing taller masts of up to 30 metres).

Infracapital-backed broadband ISP WightFibre, which is already investing £85m to deploy a 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across the Isle of Wight (South Coast of Hampshire), has received a £9m boost from the Government’s Building Digital UK programme in order to help extend local rural coverage.

The UK state aid supported Superfast West Yorkshire and York (SFWYY) programme and Openreach (BT) have announced the completion of their Phase 2 deployment contract, which has spent the past few years working to extend the local availability of “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) services (including a fair bit of full fibre).

The Department for the Economy (DfE) in Northern Ireland has issued a brief progress update on their £197m state aid supported Project Stratum scheme, which is working with UK ISP Fibrus to spread a gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network across 85,000 premises in rural areas by March 2025.

The Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) programme have announced that UK ISP Airband has upgraded their Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) based “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) network in remote rural parts of England’s Dartmoor and Exmoor National Parks, which should bring more capacity and reliability.

The Fastershire broadband project is starting to make a new Digital Household Grant (DHG) available to homes in some rural parts of South Herefordshire (i.e. those that were originally due to receive FTTP broadband via UK ISP Gigaclear), which will enable them to help cover the installation cost of an “interim broadband solution.”

The state aid supported Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) broadband rollout programme has today issued an update on their £6m Fibre Extension Programme (FEP) contract with Openreach, which was originally due to complete by the end of 2021 but is still ongoing and has been extended to cover a further 100 homes.

The Scottish Government has today launched a new Open Market Review (OMR), which forms part of the UK Government’s £5bn Project Gigabit broadband rollout and aims to identify which areas will need state aid support to help spread the availability of gigabit speed networks “nationwide” by 2030.
