The Scottish Government‘s Rural Economy Secretary, Fergus Ewing, has pledged to quit if he fails to deliver on the new £600m R100 project, which aspires to make “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) ISP networks available to “every single premise in Scotland” by the end of 2021 (here and here); March 2022 as a financial year.

The Telford and Wrekin Council in Shropshire (England) and Openreach (BT) have announced the completion of their joint £5.6m rollout of FTTC based “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) technology in the region, which can now cover 98% of local homes and businesses.

The £1.6bn+ state aid supported Broadband Delivery UK programme has published its final progress update for Q1 2018, which confirms that it has so far helped 4,852,808 extra premises across the United Kingdom to be put within reach of a fixed “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) network.

The European Commission has publish their 2018 Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI), which uses data from 2017 and 2018 to reveal the United Kingdom’s progress toward the EU’s Digital Agenda goals (e.g. NGA 30Mbps+ broadband for all by 2020). This year we remain ranked 7th out of 28 member states.

The Welsh Government has issued a progress update on their existing Superfast Cymru project with Openreach (BT), which suggests that BT has delivered a “significantly larger volume” of premises than either party anticipated at the outset but some areas are still causing problems.

We might be set to leave the EU in March 2019 but the Lancashire County Council (LCC) in England has announced that they are seeking £3m from the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD) to help improve local broadband connectivity, which will be matched by £2m from the council (£5m total).

The Kent County Council has unveiled how it will aim to improve local coverage of fixed line “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) networks beyond the current 95%, which will involve a £4.545m (gainshare) extension of the existing BT (Openreach) contract and a new ‘Kent Voucher Scheme’.

BT has released their Q1 2018 (calendar) results, which sees them increase FTTP and Mobile infrastructure investment via an annual capex allocation of around £3.7bn (excluding BDUK) and report that 1.56 million UK premises are now covered by their G.fast and FTTP based “ultrafast broadband” (100Mbps+).

The Superfast North Yorkshire project in England has revealed which will be the first areas to benefit from their £20.5m Phase 3 contract with Openreach (BT). This aims to deploy Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband to cover 12,500 local premises (14,239 if you include FTTC).

The Government’s £1.6bn+ Broadband Delivery UK project has published its latest take-up data to the end of 2017 (Q4) for the state aid supported roll-out of “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) services across the United Kingdom, which sees adoption continue to rise with many areas above 50%.

The state aid supported Better Broadband for Suffolk project in England is expected to start signing some new contracts with ISPs in the latter part of June – July 2018, which could help them to achieve their ambition of 100% “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) coverage by the end of 2020.

A curious new report from BroadbandChoices has claimed that only 12 out of the 391 UK councils analysed have reached 95% coverage of “superfast broadband” and the worst is allegedly West Dunbartonshire (Scotland), which suffers from only 11% coverage. Except it’s completely wrong.

The Scottish Government has today announced that 95.5% of homes and businesses across Scotland should be able to order a “high speed fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) based internet line, although this figure drops to just 92.7% when considering those able to access “superfast broadband” speeds of 24Mbps+.

An independent model has estimated that the coverage of fixed “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) services across the United Kingdom has grown slightly from 94.7% in December 2017 (here) to 95.1% at the end of March 2018, with most of the increase being fuelled by publicly funded projects.

The Fermanagh and Omagh District Council has written to First Trust Bank, Ulster Bank and Danske Bank in the hope of encouraging them to help invest in improvements to local broadband connectivity. Recently online banking has become much more important due to the closure of local branches.

The County Councils Network (CCN), which highlights itself as the “national voice” for England’s 37 county councils, has today claimed that 72% of the country’s counties are below the national average download speed of 45Mbps and 27% have average speeds below Ofcom’s 30Mbps+ definition of “superfast“.

Several local authorities in England, including Staffordshire, Devon and Somerset, have begun to consult on the next phase of their respective projects for expanding the coverage of “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) services. Thousands more premises and some FTTP is on the cards.
