The boss of rural ISP B4RN, which is rolling out a 1Gbps community-built and funded fibre optic (FTTH) broadband network to homes in Lancashire, Cumbria, Yorkshire, Norfolk and Suffolk, has warned that the UK Gov’s proposed 10Mbps USO may force them to “retrench within our current boundaries.”

The UK Government’s Better Broadband Subsidy Scheme, which offers grants worth up to £400 to help homes and business that are unable to access a broadband speed of at least 2Mbps, has so far issued over 10,000 voucher codes and consumed £3.1m of its budget. But it’s also about to end.

The National Housing Federation has warned that a combination of factors (e.g. poor broadband, few jobs, expensive housing, closed post offices and an ageing population etc.) is contributing to a rise in the movement of people out of rural areas and into cities (especially younger people).

The Cambridgeshire County Council has announced the completion of their Phase 2 Broadband Delivery UK contract with Openreach (BT), which has successfully expanded the coverage of FTTC/P based fixed line “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) networks to 95% of local premises by the end of 2017.

The BT Group has published their latest results for Q3 2017 (calendar), which saw their retail broadband base add 22K subscribers to total 9,307,000 (up from 19K in Q2 vs 29K in Q1) and this includes 5.285 million “fibre broadband” FTTC/P users (up by 179K vs 170K in Q2 and 211K in Q1).

Earlier this year Gigaclear “regretfully decided to withdraw” from the West Oxfordshire Superfast Broadband project, which followed a dispute with their supplier ITS Technology Group (here). But the good news is that the ISP has signed a new deal to rollout FTTP broadband to 10,000+ rural premises.

A reinvestment of £6 million into the on-going Broadband East Riding project in Yorkshire (England) will enable Openreach (BT) to extend their existing FTTC, FTTP and FTTRN rollout of “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) in the region to an additional 2,200 homes and businesses.

Rural fibre optic ISP Gigaclear has signed a new £200m contract with civil engineering giant Carillion telent, which will help to support the rollout of their 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premise (FTTP) ultrafast broadband network to more than 80,000 premises in rural South West England.

The publicly funded Community WiFi scheme in Essex, which offers small grants (up to £400) to help communities setup a public wireless network via local hubs (village halls, community centres etc.), has this month been opened up to all suppliers via the regional Superfast Essex project.

The Government’s National Infrastructure Commission has launched a new consultation which, among other things, warns that the United Kingdom “risks falling behind” other countries in its next generation mobile (5G) and broadband connections unless “urgent action” is taken to increase capacity.

Fixed wireless ISP Boundless Networks has revealed that they intend to bid on Phase 3 of the state aid supported Superfast North Yorkshire project, which if successful would expand their “ultrafast broadband” (100Mbps+) network to cover 25,000 premises in rural areas across the county.

The European Commission’s (EC) competition regulator has called on the UK Government to defend its business rates regime after an unidentified complainant alleged that the charges, which are managed by the Valuation Office Agency (VOA), were being abused to provide “illegal state aid” to BT.

The latest independent data to September 2017 has estimated that “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) capable fixed line networks now cover 93.9% of premises in the United Kingdom (96.6% if you include all “fibre based” lines of any speed inc. sub-24Mbps), with Wales and Scotland both touching completion.

The Norfolk County Council (NCC) will next week debate the prospect of making a bid worth £13m to the UK Government’s new £200m Local Full Fibre Network (LFFN) programme, which could help to bring Gigabit class FTTP broadband services to public sector sites and businesses.
