Fibre optic ISP Gigaclear has today announced which areas will be the first to benefit from the second phase of the Fastershire project in Gloucestershire, which will see their ultrafast 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premise (FTTP) network being extended to thousands of additional rural premises.

The latest Q1 2017 figures from the Government’s £1.6bn+ Broadband Delivery UK project has revealed that some 4,426,493 additional premises across the United Kingdom can now order a “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) service as a result of their joint investment with local councils and the private sector.

The Broadband Stakeholder Group, which is a think-tank for the UK Government, has published a new report from Analysys Mason that proposes a number of changes for making it easier and cheaper for telecoms operators to deploy ultrafast 5G Mobile and “full fibre” (FTTP/H) broadband networks.

The UK Labour Party has today published the final version of their Manifesto for the General Election, which is broadly similar to last week’s leak but includes a few changes. One of those tweaks is an aspiration (not target) to roll-out 300Mbps broadband “across the UK within the next decade” (i.e. by 2027/28).

The BT Group has released their latest quarterly report (Q1 2017 calendar), which saw their retail broadband base reach a total of 9,276,000 subscribers (up by 29K vs 83K in Q4 2016) and Openreach has begun a consultation on the “potential benefits and costs of a large-scale FTTP deployment.“
