London-based analyst firm Ovum has published a new report (Global Broadband Experience Scorecard 2015), which among other things concludes that for typical usage broadband ISPs must be able to deliver a minimum of 10Mbps (Megabits per second); rising to 50Mbps for users of Ultra HD (4K) video.

The Suffolk Coastal District Council in England has said that a successful pilot of a rural fixed wireless broadband network, which covers a number of areas (Shingle Street, Aldeburgh etc.) and was first launched in 2012 (here), could soon be expanded to cover more locations.

The Federation of Small Businesses has today published a new telecoms focused report that once again calls upon the Government to introduce a plan for “ultrafast broadband” and a new Universal Service Obligation (USO) that would deliver a minimum Internet speed of 10Mbps to all.

The Superfast North Yorkshire project has revealed that a further £21m is to be spent on expanding superfast broadband (24Mbps+) connectivity to 95% of local premises across the county. As a result discussions are now taking place with BT in order to “draw up contracts for the start of phase three“.

The community driven Digital Dales (Fibre GarDen) project, which recently began work to roll-out a 100Mbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to 580 premises in the rural Cumbria (England) villages of Garsdale and Dentdale, is trying to recover after unpaid contractors downed tools.

The Oxford Internet Institute and RCUK Digital Economy Research Hub have conducted an academic study into Internet access and the gap between urban and rural broadband speeds, which they suggest “risks damaging business, adds to farming costs and could be driving young people away“.

The Government’s Connection Voucher scheme, which offers grants worth between £100 and £3,000 to help SMEs around 50 UK cities get a superfast broadband (30Mbps+) service installed, has confirmed that 40,941 businesses have now benefitted from the vouchers (up sharply from 15K in Q1 2015).

An independent study of broadband Internet connectivity in Wales has claimed that 80% of premises in the country should now have access to a superfast connection (30Mbps+), which rises to 81.3% when you use the Government’s definition of 24Mbps+. But rural areas still have a long way to go.

UK ISP Gigaclear, which recently won the contract to ensure that 6,495 additional rural premises in Gloucestershire (England) are able to receive “ultra fast” Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband by the end of 2017, has announced that Seven Springs in Cockleford will be the first to benefit.

The Fastershire project has today published a raw roll-out plan for the recently signed £10m deal with fibre optic ISP Gigaclear, which will ensure that 6,495 additional rural premises in Gloucestershire are able to receive “ultra fast” Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband connectivity.

The Superfast Worcestershire project in England has confirmed that even more premises will soon gain access to BT’s “high-speed fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network thanks to a reinvestment boost of £2.1m due to stronger than expected take-up. A further £0.9m will also come from deployment “savings“.
