As expected the Better Broadband for Nottinghamshire project in England will soon be extended, putting “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) connectivity within reach of thousands more homes and businesses, after the local authority officially signed a Superfast Extension Programme (SEP) contract with BT.

In a controversial twist the Government’s Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA) has called on a superfast broadband project in Rothbury (Northumberland), which received a slice of state aid, to repay any benefits derived from claw-back (as opposed to reinvesting into better coverage).

The Connect8 campaign, which represents the residents of eight rural villages in southern Oxfordshire where BT have refused to upgrade (Howe Hill, Britwell Hill, Cookley Green, Greenfield, Park Corner, Pishill with Stonor, Russells Water and Swyncombe), looks set to adopt a fixed wireless broadband network to fix the problems.

The £1.5m Aylesbury Vale Broadband project, which is supported by the district council in Buckinghamshire (England) and aims to improve connectivity for residents of several rural villages (North Marston and Granborough with more to follow), has lifted its future service speed target from 30Mbps to 1000Mbps.

The national UK telecoms operator, BT, has today published the latest results for Q1-2015 (calendar) and confirmed that their retail business added +121,000 new broadband subscribers in the quarter (up from +119k in Q4 2014) to total 7,713,000, which includes 3,010,000 on BTInfinity “fibre broadband” (up by +266k vs +209k in Q4 2014).

After somewhat of a change in management the European Commission has today moved to adopt the final design for a Digital Single Market strategy across the EU, which among other things aims to foster online trade, harmonise radio spectrum for mobile services and create better incentives for investment in high-speed broadband.

Ordinarily the news that BT is bringing fibre optic broadband (FTTC/P) cables to your area would be welcome. But it’s not always so and sometimes the use of public money to help upgrade the smallest of UK rural areas, especially when a “superfast” (24Mbps+) capable provider is already serving local customers, can raise concerns.

The county of Hampshire in England can celebrate after it recently became the latest Broadband Delivery UK based Government programme with BT to complete its target of ensuring that 90% of homes and businesses can access “superfast” Internet download speeds of 24Mbps+ by the end of 2015.

After a few last minutes problems the community co-operative Digital Dales (Fibre GarDen) project has officially started the build-phase for their new 100Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network, which will serve 580 premises in the rural villages of Garsdale and Dentdale (Cumbria, England).

The annual Global Connectivity Index from Huawei, which claims to offer a quantitative assessment of connectivity and its value from both national and industrial perspectives, reports that the United Kingdom has dropped to 5th place due to weaknesses with “low cable infrastructure” and rural Mobile Broadband coverage.

A tiny rural community called Metheringham Fen in Lincolnshire (England’s East Midlands) has complained that their broadband speeds have actually gotten worse since BT is alleged to have upgraded the local connectivity. The situation has forced some locals to shell out on an expensive and restrictive Satellite solution instead.

The European Commission’s new Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society, Günther Oettinger, has for the first time started to discuss what targets we should aim for after the current Digital Agenda programme completes and hopefully delivers “superfast” broadband speeds of 30Mbps+ to all by 2020; with 50% also subscribed to a 100Mbps+ service.
