Openreach 2023 Engineers Threading UK Fibre

The Welsh Government (WG) has released their Q1 2023 progress update on the £52.5m Phase 2 Superfast Cymru contract with Openreach (BT), which confirms that a total of 36,869 extra premises (up from 35,770 in Q4 2022) have now gained access to their gigabit speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network.

Openreach (BT) and Crimestoppers have begun offering a reward of £20,000 to help catch the criminals who were responsible for several thefts of their copper broadband and phone cables around the Thamesmead area of South-East London, which caused significant service disruption for locals.

A new broadband ISP called Earth Broadband (earth.) has launched that claims to be doing things differently by “putting customers and the planet first, and with fast speeds and fair pricing.” In particular, some of the money from subscriptions will be used to help remove plastic from the ocean and plant 5 extra trees every month.

Openreach has announced that they will finally introduce their new ‘Advanced Managed Install’ option for standalone UK broadband products (i.e. SOGEA – FTTC and SOGfast – G.fast) on 1st July 2023, which will give UK ISPs another option that can be offered to those with more complex installation requirements.

Cuckoo (Giganet) has quietly become one of the first Openreach based UK broadband ISPs to withdraw their Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC / VDSL2) based products from sale for new customers (existing users remain supported), which leaves them only able to offer Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) plans to over 10 million premises.

The Shetland Islands Council (Scotland) has given the green light for Shetland Telecom, which is the arms-length network operator that the council set up some years ago, to apply for Code Powers – ahead of a possible move to expand their full fibre broadband network to reach the remotest homes and businesses.

Openreach (BT) has today announced the next batch of 119 UK exchanges under ‘Tranche 12‘ of their project to move away from copper-based analogue phone (PSTN / WLR etc.) services and on to a new all-IP network, which will also occur once over 75% of premises in each area are able to get FTTP broadband.

Back in April 2017 the UK Government allowed broadband networks in England and Wales to claim 100% business rates relief on new fibre infrastructure for a period of 5-years, which is a change that Openreach and other FTTP builders had long sought. So it may come as a surprise to learn that BT has never claimed this benefit.

Broadband ISP BT will this week expand the rollout of their Voice-over-Internet-Protocol (VoIP) based Digital Voice product, which was only recently restarted with a smaller group of customers after a long pause (here), to include “all full fibre and a smaller group of broadband customers yet to switch to Digital Voice.”

Ofcom has this morning announced that it will NOT block Openreach’s proposed “Equinox 2” discount scheme for their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP products from being introduced, which came after rival networks raised competition concerns over the plans.

The situation at troubled internet provider ZYBRE (Air Broadband) appears to have experienced another twist after some customers, specifically those on Openreach based broadband packages, reportedly received a new email that stated the provider would be “ceasing” related services and switching users to a new ISP.

BT Group has today published their latest Q4 FY23 (quarterly) results to March 2023, which saw Openreach’s Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network grow to cover 10.274 million premises (up by 702k in the quarter vs 810k last quarter) and EE increase their 5G Ready customer base to 9.12 million (up from 8.5m).

Vodafone UK has released their latest Q4 FY23 results, which reveals that their fixed line broadband ISP base grew strongly to total 1.223 million customers (up by 65k in the quarter vs 47k in Q3 FY23), while their mobile base also now totals 17.92 million (up by 118k vs 259k in the previous quarter). But job cuts galore.

The Shropshire Council in England has confirmed the completion of their final contract under the £36m (state aid) “Superfast Broadband” (30Mbps+) rollout programme, which over the last 10 years has signed deals with various operators (e.g. Openreach, Airband) and extended coverage from 24% to 98.5% of premises.

The CEO of mobile and broadband ISP Vodafone UK, Ahmed Essam, has joined other retail internet providers in publicly calling on Ofcom to approve Openreach’s proposed “Equinox 2” discount scheme for their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based products, which is being challenged by alternative networks (AltNets).

One of the problems with Openreach’s quirky and expensive FTTP on Demand (FTTPoD or FoD) broadband product for UK ISPs is that it suffers from a high rate of order cancellations, which are running at a rate of around 90% following the site survey and confirmation of the build charge. In response, the network operator is changing the order and survey process.

Fern Trading-backed UK ISP Giganet (Cuckoo) appears to have been suffering from a “mass service outage” over the past 12-24 hours which, judging by feedback from customers across the UK, has resulted in a variety of sporadic connectivity problems since around 3pm yesterday afternoon.
