Openreach (BT) has faced some criticism after it sent a letter to one or more of Northern Ireland’s (NI) local authorities, which appeared to suggest that the operator would have provided FTTP broadband to more premises than the winner of the £165m Project Stratum contract, had they won it instead.

Openreach (BT) plan to increase the wholesale price of their strongest maintenance level across almost all of their broadband and phone products (WLR, LLU, SOGEA and FTTC/P) for UK ISPs, although the change will mainly affect ISPs selling business packages with a stronger commitment to fault repairs.

The Government has posted a useful State Aid evaluation of the UK National Broadband Scheme (Superfast Broadband Programme), which identifies a number of strong benefits from the £1.9bn (public) programme that has so far helped to extend “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) connectivity to nearly 97% of premises.

Broadband ISP Zen Internet has today announced that they’re reducing the standing pricing on two of their top Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) packages – 300Mbps and 900Mbps – by up to 10%. Broadband and telecoms giant BT Group has announced that they will aim to hire a further 428 UK apprentices (229) and graduates (199) this year – part of their September 2021 intake plan. We all know how annoying even a brief loss of home broadband connectivity can be, particularly during the current COVID-19 crisis, but spare a thought for poor Joseph Chesney who lives in a rural area just outside of Endon (Staffordshire Moorlands), he’s been waiting almost 3 months for Openreach to fix a broken fibre optic line.

At present if you order a Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP line on Openreach’s UK network then you’re likely to end up with a single port Optical Network Terminal (ONT) installed on your inside wall (example), but a new 4 port ONT is coming this summer 2021 and we’ve been given a sneak peak.
