Northern Ireland’s Department for the Economy (DfE) has today confirmed what we first revealed in September (here), which is that alternative network ISP Fibrus have secure the £165m Project Stratum contract and will be extending “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) coverage to 76,000+ extra rural premises by March 2024.

The combined reach of 1Gbps (1000Mbps+) speed capable ISP networks, via both Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) and DOCSIS 3.1 technologies, has now helped to increase national “gigabit broadband” coverage to 34.1% of UK premises (up sharply from just 10% one year ago).

As expected, the BT Group has today announced that they’ve achieved their target of buying 100% of their electricity worldwide from renewable sources. At the same time Openreach has revealed that they will change a third of their 27,000 UK vehicles (engineer vans and cars etc.) to electric by 2025.

Two remote rural hamlets in the Eden district of Cumbria (England) – Raisbeck and Sunbiggin – can now access a 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network after a local farmer helped to bring Openreach’s (BT) rollout costs down by excavating more than 1.5 miles of trench across 10 fields.

UK ISP BT has just issued their first biannual report on the progress they’ve made toward delivering the 10Mbps Universal Service Obligation (USO) for broadband, which highlights some of the known challenges. Overall they’ve so far handled 9,000 applications and 512 confirmed orders, resulting in a USO build for 4,000+ homes.

UK ISP Sky Broadband has just officially announced the launch of their new Openreach Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based “Superfast” (59Mbps) and “Ultrafast” (145Mbps) broadband package for new and existing customers from £35 per month. Meanwhile an outbreak of COVID-19 has forced their Sheffield call centre to close.

The BT Group has today published their Q2 2020/21 results, which saw Openreach expand their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network to cover 3.5 million UK premises (up from 2.98m last quarter). The full fibre build rate has now hit 40,000 premises per week (up from c.34,000).

Openreach (BT) has informed ISPs with Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC / VDSL2) and G.fast broadband lines that they will “soon” be deploying functionality that allows providers who wish to purchase this to amend Dynamic Line Management (DLM) profiles on customer lines, which sounds as if it may be more flexible than prior approaches.

Ofcom UK has set out new measures that will make switching between broadband ISPs on physically separate networks easier (e.g. Openreach to Cityfibre), but due to the complexities involved providers will be given until December 2022 implement it. Mobile operators will also be banned from selling “locked” handsets.

The Scottish Government has today linked their new Scottish Broadband Voucher Scheme (SBVS) to the UK’s Rural Gigabit Connectivity (RGC) programme in order to significantly boost the value of their vouchers, which expands the pot up to £8,500 for SMEs and up to £6,500 for homes.

The South Gloucestershire Council in England has announced that Phase 3B of their state aid supported deployment of gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP technology, which is being delivered via Openreach (BT), is in the process of reaching a number of additional rural communities.

Broadband ISP Virgin Media UK has warned the market regulator, Ofcom, against allowing BT (Openreach) to sign “deeply discounted and long-term” wholesale agreements for “full fibre” (FTTP) services with rivals ISPs, which they claim might make it harder for alternative networks to compete against the established giant.

Mobile operator and ISP Vodafone has just introduced a number of discounts to their FTTC (Superfast) and FTTP (Gigafast – Openreach and Cityfibre) based broadband packages, which reduces the monthly price on their superfast plans and offers several months of free service on their gigafast options.

The seemingly rapid progress of Openreach’s (BT) move to replace their old copper phone services with a new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network has today prompted Ofcom, the UK telecoms regulator, to reconsider their time-line for the withdrawal of copper services.

Ofcom has this morning opened an investigation to examine whether or not BT is complying with their obligations under the new UK Universal Service Obligation (USO), which requires them to help deliver at least a 10Mbps broadband download speed, upon request, to those in poorly served areas.
