One of the little known gripes against Openreach’s on-going UK rollout of “gigabit capable” Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP technology is that some newly deployed areas are still limiting the network to a top download speed of 330Mbps (50Mbps upload), rather than supporting 1Gbps speeds.

The Cornwall County Council in South West England has agreed to create the “Superfast 3 – Inclusive Growth” broadband project at a total cost of £5.835m, which could extend the reach of “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) to “at least” 2,700 additional premises (mostly homes and 546 businesses).

Customers taking part in Sky Broadband’s new SOGEA product trial are also being provided with a new router (SR203), which is probably the long awaited successor to their current Sky Q Hub (ER110) device and will most likely be shipped alongside future G.fast and FTTP based “ultrafast broadband” packages (possibly FTTC).

Openreach (BT) has announced two new UK technology trials (i.e. an FTTP Exchange Upgrade process and Digital Voice services) for premises in Salisbury (Wiltshire) and Mildenhall (Suffolk), which forms part of their wider efforts to move toward an All-IP and national “full fibre” broadband ISP network.

At present the two fastest packages on Openreach’s (BT) Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network are asymmetric options, which offer peak download speeds of 500Mbps or 1000Mbps and uploads of 165Mbps or 220Mbps respectively. The good news is that symmetrical speeds are coming.

The European Commission has published their 2019 Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI), which uses data from 2018 to reveal how the UK’s fixed line broadband and mobile networks compare with the rest of the EU. This year we jumped in overall rank from 6th to 5th out of 28 countries but are only 10th for connectivity.

Openreach’s (BT) effort to cover the whole of Salisbury (Wiltshire) with their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based ultrafast broadband ISP network (here) has been given a boost by a new Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) technology, which reduces costs and disruption by precisely mapping where to dig new cables.

The Scottish Government’s Minister for Connectivity, Paul Wheelhouse, has confirmed that contracts for the £600m Reaching 100% (R100) superfast broadband project won’t now be signed until the “end of the year,” which suggests that the rollout may be unable to complete by the end of 2021 (March 2022 financial) as planned.

Openreach (BT) has announced plans to trial higher levels of ReTransmission (ReTx / G.INP) technology on their Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) based “superfast broadband” capable ISP lines, which they believe could slightly improve service speed and help stability.

6th June, 2019 (48 Comments)

The national telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today confirmed the final details for how the new 10Mbps+ (1Mbps upload) Universal Service Obligation (USO) for broadband – to be supplied by ISPs BT and KCOM – will be delivered and work once it’s introduced from 20th March 2020.

Openreach (BT) has discounted the pricing for their multi-Gigabit virtual (grey) dark fibre style solution (OSA Filter Connect / FSP3000) on 5 year contract terms and introduced a longer 7 year term in order to “better meet the needs of infrastructure providers,” which tend to plan their networks over a longer period of time.

The Scottish Government has officially implemented a new Code of Practice in Scotland, which appears to create a uniform technical standard for “narrow trenching” method of civil engineering (i.e. trenches less than 300mm in width) that could help to speed up the rollout of fibre broadband ISP networks across the country.

The troubled Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) project has announced that it is looking for ISPs to help support the launch of a new funding scheme, which is due to launch later in 2019 and will help rural communities to get a faster broadband network built. Meanwhile Gigaclear has been given a deadline to get their FTTP plan sorted.

Openreach (BT) is slowly progressing with a future upgrade of their hybrid-fibre G.fast broadband technology, which could enable the service to harness some of the existing radio spectrum frequency being used by VDSL2 based Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) lines. Early tests show a possible boost to speed and coverage.
