The UK telecoms regulator has today set out more detail on how they intend to change market regulation in order to promote competition and investment in the roll-out of Gigabit capable “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband ISP networks, which will support the Government’s ambition for “nationwide” FTTP coverage by 2033.

Chinese-based IT company Huawei, which supplies a good chunk of the broadband ISP and mobile network kit being used by UK providers (routers, cabinets etc.), is under increased pressure after the fifth annual report from the Huawei Cyber Security Evaluation Centre (HCSEC) oversight board found “new risks” and limited progress.

Gigabit broadband ISP speeds will soon be on their way to all 129 properties in the remote rural Welsh village of Llancarfan (Vale of Glamorgan), which is thanks to a new co-funded Community Fibre Partnership (CFP) project with Openreach (BT). This is said to be the “largest full-fibre … deal of its kind in Wales.“

Broadband ISPs that have taken Openreach’s (BT) Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based 330Mbps (50Mbps upload) product at wholesale will be pleased to learn that the operator has extended their existing rental discount by six months until 30th September 2019, but not all providers will pass the savings on to end-users.

The new CEO of UK telecoms giant BT, Philip Jansen, is reported to be considering a huge reduction in jobs that could cut another 25,000 staff from their current workforce of nearly 100,000 (i.e. 82,500 direct employees and 12,300 contractors). Such a move might help to fund their roll-out of “full fibre” broadband ISP technology.

A recent report from the Centre for Cities think-tank has revealed the top ten best and worst cities for coverage of fixed “ultrafast broadband” (100Mbps+) connectivity across the United Kingdom, which sees Luton rank top with 95% of homes and businesses being within reach and sadly Aberdeen came bottom on 2.3%.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today published their final annual plan for 2019/20, which summarises all of the major work they intend to do this year (e.g. boosting mobile coverage, new consumer protections, implementing the 10Mbps USO for broadband and promoting investment in “fibre” networks etc.).

Political leaders from 20 cities and towns across the North of England have written an Open Letter to Ofcom that calls for a more coordinated way of deploying new Gigabit capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP networks, which could speed-up the effort by avoiding the need to dig up streets several times over.

The UK and Welsh Governments have today jointly announced that the £67m Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme (GBVS), which normally offers up to £2,500 to help businesses and surrounding homes gain access to a 1Gbps capable broadband ISP connection (ideally “full fibre” FTTP), is to be boosted up to £5,500 in Wales.

The Scottish Government (SG) has been heavily criticised by an opposition Conservative MP, John Lamont, after it confirmed that the bidding process for their £600m R100 (Reaching 100%) programme was still ongoing and that contracts would now be vaguely awarded some time “during 2019.”

Sadly a fair few of Openreach’s (BT) green broadband and phone street cabinets in Sheffield (England) are “often targeted with graffiti.” In response the operator has joined with the Kelham Island and Neepsend Community Alliance (KINCA) to turn a number of them into “works of art” instead. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Openreach (BT) is set to launch a new trial next month that will add 12 new speed steps to their Dynamic Line Management (DLM) system for Next Gen Access (NGA) lines, which appears to be focused on UK Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC / VDSL2) connections.
