A staggering 1 billion accounts belonging to Internet giant Yahoo! have been breached by a second major hack, albeit one that occurred in August 2013. Today BT Retail and other broadband ISPs that have used the firm for their email (e.g. Sky Broadband) are warning customers to change their passwords.

Surrey is special because it’s one of the few counties in England to have already delivered over 96% coverage of “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) and as a result they were able to skip the Government’s second Broadband Delivery UK phase. But the council has this week agreed to go even further.

A recent software update / patch for Microsoft Windows 8 and 10 appears to be disrupting Internet / website connectivity for some broadband ISP customers in the UK and elsewhere. The update apparently makes it so that some systems are unable to get DHCP information from routers.

Business ISP Gradwell Communications has recently published a league table of broadband download and upload speeds from around 92 Football League clubs across the United Kingdom. We’re not sure how useful this data is, but it’s certainly a good bit of fun.

Telecoms operator BT (EE) and long-time partner Huawei have today joined forces on a new project to both research and develop the next generation of ultrafast (20Gbps capable) 5G based Mobile Broadband technology at the BT Labs facility in Ipswich.

The UK telecoms regulator has begun a new consultation on their proposed Duct and Pole Access (DPA) solution, which will help ISPs to build alternative fibre optic broadband networks (FTTP/H) by granting them cheaper and easier access to Openreach’s (BT) cable ducts and telegraph poles.

The Citizens Advice agency has described the broadband market’s current compensation system as being “deeply unfair” after it revealed that Openreach (BT) had failed to complete over 20% of repairs (364,000) and 6% (281,000) of installations on time between April to September 2016.

Bad news for BT today. Ofcom confirms that it has been unable to reach a voluntary agreement over the future of Openreach and would now force the operator to adopt “legal separation“. A new UK framework for the next decade of telecoms and broadband regulation will now be established.
