Customers of BT’s consumer broadband ISP, specifically those with one of their “full fibre” (FTTP) packages, can now benefit from a new “speed boost trial”, which will allow them to test out faster download speeds of up to 500Mbps at no extra cost. Customers who decide not to keep the faster tier will be put back on their previous package.

Alternative UK network providers have heavily criticised Ofcom’s provisional decision not to oppose Openreach’s (BT) proposal for a “major” price cut to their wholesale Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband products, which they warn could impact competition by discouraging ISPs from adopting rival networks.

UK ISP BT has today launched a range of discounts for new customers, which among other things knocks their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based ultrafast and gigabit speed home broadband packages down to some of the cheapest monthly prices that they’ve ever offered. The setup fee is also now free.

As expected Ofcom, the UK telecoms regulator, has today launched a final consultation on Openreach’s (BT) recently proposed plan to introduce a “major” change to the wholesale pricing of their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband products for ISPs (details), which could result in cheaper prices for consumers.

Mobile benchmarking firm RootMetrics will today publish a new biannual H1 2021 report into the performance of 5G (mobile broadband) networks in the United Kingdom, which praises EE (BT) for their “consistent broad availability … fast speeds and reliability.”

Ookla, which operates the popular Speedtest.net service, has just published a new Q1-Q2 2021 (H1) study of 5G mobile broadband performance from Three UK, EE, Vodafone and O2 (VMO2), which found that Three delivered the fastest average (median) download speeds of 231.07Mbps. But Vodafone wins on uploads (19.69Mbps).

A new report from market analysts at Bloomberg Intelligence (BI) has perhaps stated the obvious by concluding that the recent UK mega broadband and mobile merger between O2 and Virgin Media is “unlikely to trigger a chain reaction of mergers,” which is because there “simply aren’t many easy or credible deal options left.”

Openreach (BT) has published the next – Tranche 5 – list of 86 UK exchange locations where they plan to move away from old copper-based analogue phone (PSTN / WLR etc.) services and on to a new all-IP network, which will occur in areas where over 75% of premises can get their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network.

Civil engineering firm Avonline Networks has today confirmed what we revealed back in June (here), which is that they have secured a 5-year contract to help UK ISP Ogi (formerly Spectrum Internet) rollout a new gigabit speed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband service across South East Wales. But we do get a bit more detail.

Ofcom has today fined BT £42,500 after it ruled that the UK telecoms operator had broken their rules by providing “inaccurate information” in response to a statutory information request, which was seeking data about EE’s Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) broadband (4G) service for their 2019 Connected Nations report.

A new Which? survey of more than 3,000 customers from five major UK broadband ISP and TV providers – including BT, Sky Broadband, Virgin Media, TalkTalk and EE – has found that two thirds of respondents experienced at least one problem with their service in the past year, while 30% said the price they pay had increased.

Some broadband ISP and phone services in parts of Bangor (Gwynedd, North Wales) were disrupted yesterday after a fire broke out in BT’s exchange building at around 5:40pm, which perhaps mercifully sits just down the road from the local fire station and thus the incident was quickly brought under control. Nobody was hurt.

The BT Group has today reported their latest Q1 2021/22 results, which among other things reports that Openreach’s 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network now covers 5.16 million UK premises (up from 4.6m last quarter) and 860,000 of BT’s retail ISP customers have taken the service.

Mobile testing firm RootMetrics has published their latest biannual H1 2021 study of mobile network (4G and 5G) and broadband performance across the United Kingdom, which once again named EE (BT) as the best overall operator. But they were beaten in one category, with O2 (VMO2) coming top for accessibility.
