A new report has estimated that around 4.6% of premises in the United Kingdom could be affected by full to capacity FTTC (VDSL2) based “fibre broadband” street cabinets on Openreach’s (BT) network, which is up from 4.1% in April 2018 and might stop you from being able to order a new service.

The Dorset County Council in England appears to have begun the process of seeking a supplier for the future Phase 4 contract of their Superfast Dorset project, which hopes to extend the coverage of “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) ISP networks to an additional 4,000 to 20,000 homes and businesses.

Ofcom has today launched a new consultation on their annual plan for 2019/20, which summarises all of the major work they intend to do next year (e.g. improving mobile coverage, new consumer protections, deciding which ISPs will deliver the 10Mbps USO for broadband and promoting investment in “fibre” networks etc.).

A serious landslide, which cut-off the rural hamlet of Kinloch Hourn in the West Highlands (Scotland) from broadband and phone services, has been reconnected after Openreach (BT) used one of their airborne drones to fly a new cable over the safety exclusion zone, around the landslide, and to the base of the Quoich Dam.

The Scottish Borders Council has published a review examining the impact of the £8.4m in public investment that went into improving the local reach of “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+). This finds that the Openreach (BT) roll-out “possibly” delivered value for money, but there were “major problems with the quality of the coverage.”

Telecoms giant BT Group has today signed two new energy deals, primarily on behalf of sibling mobile operator EE, which will mean that 96% of their global operations are now powered by renewable electricity (up from 81% last year).

BT has complemented the launch of their new Smart Hub 2 router (here) by publishing an updated study of WiFi speedtests, which pitted their kit against routers from TalkTalk, EE, Virgin Media, Sky Broadband and Plusnet. Unsurprisingly the UK ISP claims to provid “better wi-fi coverage” than all of them.

After several months of trials UK ISP BT will tomorrow morning announce the launch of their new Smart Hub 2 (SH2) wireless ultrafast broadband router, which is complemented by a “coverage guarantee” to deliver strong WiFi signals across your home via the new “Complete Wi-Fi” solution.

A number of homes in the South Norfolk village of Marlingford were left without fixed line broadband and phone access for over two weeks after a car (Mini Cooper) crashed into one of Openreach’s (BT) local telegraph poles on 6th November, causing significant damage to both the pole and its underground cables.

A further 81 new locations have today (November 2018 update) been confirmed as the next to benefit from Openreach’s (BT) roll-out of 330Mbps capable hybrid fibre G.fast “ultrafast broadband” ISP technology, which aims to cover 5.7 million UK homes and businesses by the end of 2020 (March 2021 financial year).

Openreach (BT) has today announced that they will conduct a “large scale” UK trial of Seamless Rate Adaption (SRA) technology on Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC / VDSL2) based superfast broadband ISP lines (40-80Mbps), which could improve service stability by varying the speed more effectively.

Mobile operator EE has moved to defuse some of Three UK’s recent promotional efforts by announcing their own demo of the new 5G wireless broadband technology, which in this case showcased BT Sport’s first live trial of a remote production broadcast over their new network at Wembley Stadium in London.

It’s that time of the year again, when UK ISPs get in on the Black Friday action by offering all sorts of discounts to new customers. Kicking off the event a bit early today is BT, which has cut their unlimited 50Mbps (average) “Superfast Fibre” (FTTC/P) and phone package to just £29.99 per month, but there’s more.

The UK telecoms regulator has today issued an update on Openreach’s legal separation from BT. Overall they were “broadly satisfied with progress,” although Ofcom still wants to see more progress being made on improving “full fibre” (FTTP) and general broadband ISP connectivity.

The FTTH Council Europe has today welcomed a vote by the European Parliament to approve the new European Electronic Communications Code (EECC), which could boost investment in “full fibre” (FTTP/H) broadband and 5G mobile. But they also called on the EU to get tough on “fake fibre” marketing by ISPs.

The CEO of Vodafone Group, Nick Read, has told a meeting of investors that, at the wholesale fibre broadband ISP level, they’re “not engaging” with Openreach (BT) any more “in terms of any further opportunity,” which puts pay to earlier predictions of a new co-funded FTTP build. But they would talk to Comcast (Sky).

Mobile operator EE (BT) has today named the first UK cities to benefit from their commercial roll-out of ultrafast multi-Gigabit capable 5G mobile and wireless home broadband technology, which is due to begin later next year. Naturally London, Cardiff, Edinburgh and Belfast are on the list.
