Generally speaking the deployment of IPv6 (dynamic /56 prefix) across BT’s consumer ISP network in the UK has gone well but one key area where they still appear to be struggling is with adding support to their venerable HomeHub 5 router, which is widely installed across the customer base.

The Swindon Borough Council‘s £1.9m contract with UKB Networks, which has been building an LTE (4G) based Fixed Wireless Access network that can bring “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) to 19,500 premises (99.4% total coverage), is facing a fresh challenge over changes to its deployment.

Last night the Court of Appeal in London rejected Three UK’s final attempt to have Ofcom impose a 30% spectrum cap on their forthcoming auction of 4G and 5G friendly radio spectrum in the 2.3GHz and 3.4GHz bands, which would have stopped EE (BT) from bidding and hampered Vodafone.

BT has released their latest results to the end of 2017 (Q4 calendar), which saw their retail UK broadband ISP base add 35K subscribers to total 9,342,000 (vs +22K in Q3). Meanwhile their FTTP and G.fast “ultrafast broadband” (100Mbps+) services reached 886,000 premises (up from 770K).

Openreach (BT) has today announced that they intend to deploy Gigabit capable “full fibre” (FTTP) ultrafast broadband to 3 million premises in 8 major UK cities by 2020 via their new ‘Fibre First‘ build programme, which is up from the current target of 2 million by the same date.

Ookla, which runs the popular Speedtest.net service, has today published their annual ‘Speedtest Market Report‘ for the United Kingdom. Overall the country ranked 29th in the world for average fixed line broadband ISP speeds (Virgin Media is the fastest) and just 46th for mobile (EE is the fastest).

Two broadband providers, BT and sibling EE, have today gone to the Supreme Court in London to appeal two key aspects of an earlier ruling, which forced major UK ISPs to start blocking websites that were found to sell counterfeit goods (i.e. abuse of Trade Mark).

As expected the Welsh Government has this afternoon set out the first tentative details of their new strategy to help make “fast reliable broadband” (defined as 30Mbps+) available to “every property” in Wales, which will involve several contracts (3 lots) and could cover 88,000 premises.
