Broadband ISP and Pay TV provider Octaplus (Octaplus Supercharged), which sells services to consumers over full fibre (FTTP) networks from MS3, CityFibre and FullFibre Limited, has confirmed to ISPreview.co.uk that they’ve acquired the residential customer base from rival provider Legend Fibre.

Utility provider Ovo Energy, which only recently sold off SSE’s phone and broadband customers to ISP TalkTalk (here), is reportedly now looking at a deal to acquire Shell’s domestic UK gas, electricity and broadband business (Shell Energy) – home to c. 1.4m energy and 500,000 internet customers.

Budget broadband ISP TalkTalk is reportedly mulling over the possibility of selling their business-to-business arm (TT Business Direct Limited), which is home to around 80,000 customers and could be worth over £200 million. The provider is understood to have hired bankers at Houlihan Lokey to oversee the plan.

The current CEO of broadband and telecoms giant BT Group (inc. Openreach, Plusnet and EE), Philip Jansen (56), could be on his way out – sooner than expected. Industry sources have reportedly told a Sunday newspaper that BT Group have already begun hunting for somebody to replace Jansen, who has held the position since 2018.

Rochdale-based UK ISP Zen Internet has today announced somewhat of a reverse after the provider’s current CEO, Paul Stobart, announced his intention to retire at the end of March 2023, after five years in the role. Replacing him will be the company’s original CEO, and current Founder and Chairman, Richard Tang.

Neos Networks has announced that their ongoing project to deploy a new gigabit-capable full fibre broadband network to over 175 public sector sites (councils, hospitals etc.) across Oxfordshire (England), many of which are in rural areas, is “on track” to complete by the end of 2023 – some 90 sites have already been reached.

Consumers hoping to see significantly smaller increases in the UK price of their broadband ISP, phone and mobile services next year were given an unwelcome wake-up call today after inflation, which had been forecast to fall sharply in 2023, unexpectedly jumped from 10.1% (CPI) in January to 10.4% in February (RPI also went up).

Mobile operator Three UK has published their latest financial results, which reveals that over 4,250 sites (up from 2,200 last year) are now live with 5G – reflecting 60% UK outdoor population coverage. The average data (mobile broadband) usage per customer has also reached 25.1 GigaBytes per month (up from 19GB).

The Chancellor of the UK Government, Jeremy Hunt, has today announced the Spring 2023 Budget, which sadly made no mention of any extra support for gigabit broadband or 5G mobile deployments. But the new “full expensing” measure could help to bring down the cost of some related plant and machinery (capital expenses).
