Network provider Openreach, which as part of their deal with Ofcom (legal separation from BT) is required to maintain an independent governance structure, has today announced the appointment of Natalie Ceeney as a non-executive member to its Board. Natalie replaces Liz Benison, who will step down on 30th April 2022.

The Independent Networks Co-operative Association (INCA), which represents UK alternative full fibre and fixed wireless broadband ISP networks, has warned that Openreach’s (BT) plan to close 4,600 exchanges creates a huge and costly problem for many of their rivals in the alternative network space.

Jisc, which provides network and IT services to the education sector, has once again chosen Neos Networks to deliver yet another of their new Dark Fibre networks, which will this time be used to serve their sites (e.g. Universities and Research Centres) in Northern Ireland with speeds of up to 100Gbps (Gigabits per second).

The National Innovation Centre for Rural Enterprise (NICRE), which is collaborating with the UK Government’s Building Digital UK (BDUK) team within DCMS, has launched a new survey that seeks views and experiences of rural broadband connectivity from small and medium-sized businesses (SME) present in such areas.

Mobile operator and ISP Vodafone UK has today announced that they’ve extended the availability of their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband packages – via both Openreach and CityFibre’s national network platforms – to include small business (small office / home office) customers.

CityFibre has announced another big £300m investment boost to help support the expansion of their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network. The new funding has come from the Abu Dhabi government’s Mubadala investment fund, which has already put £500m into the operator.

Business focused UK ISP and Managed Service Provider Connectus has announced that their gigabit-capable “full fibre” broadband and Ethernet network is being extended to cover three additional business parks in the North of England, including the Waterside Business Park in St Helens, Canal Side and Chowley Oak in Chester.

The North Lanarkshire Council in Scotland has announced that up to £150 million could be spent as part of an “initial” 15-year deal with ISP Commsworld, which will work to create lots of free public WiFi networks and to upgrade local public sector sites to gigabit broadband connectivity. Local homes and businesses may also benefit.

Lancashire-based business communications provider Daisy Group has today officially acquired rival broadband ISP XLN Telecom, which is home to around 120,000 UK customers, for approximately £200 million. The move is expected to expand Daisy’s customer base in the SME sector to over 200,000.
