Ookla, which operates the popular global Speedtest.net service, has today announced that they’ve acquired mobile network benchmarking firm RootMetrics for an undisclosed sum. The goal will be to combine their normal crowdsourced data with RootMetrics’ scientifically controlled drive and walk testing data collection.

Neos Networks has today made two announcements on their UK fibre coverage, which will see them connect up 200+ public sector sites (councils, hospitals etc. – many in rural areas) in Oxfordshire and boost their full fibre, last mile, metro network expansion across the capital (London), Liverpool, Birmingham and Manchester.

Broadband giant BT, which has recently been busy boosting their defences against a possible takeover attempt by Patrick Drahi’s Altice UK, has today reported that the investor has raised their 12.1% stake in the operator (worth c.£2bn) to a total of 18%.

UK ISP Quickline, which aims to invest £500m on a major rollout of “ultrafast and gigabit-capable broadband” across rural parts of North England and beyond, has today announced that two industry veterans – Lee Allison and Ian Smith – will be appointed as their new Chief Operating Officer (COO) and Chief Technology Officer (CTO).

Uncertainty continues to cloud CityFibre’s planned UK rollout of a new 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network in the large towns of Halifax and Barnsley in Yorkshire (England), which were recently disrupted after the operator’s chosen contractor – NMCN – fell into administration.

Neos Networks has today announced that they’ve completed the latest key phase of their UK network investment programme, Project Edge, which means that they’ve now unbundled a total of 550 BT exchanges and will reach a “full fibre” footprint of more than 34,000km before the end of the year. Hull-based alternative network ISP MS3, backed by European infrastructure fund Asterion, has today revealed a major expansion of their existing service, which will see them deploy a new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to serve over 500,000 homes and businesses across the North of England.

The UK Office for National Statistics (ONS) has revealed that the telecoms industry has gone from last year’s report, when spending on research and development grew by just 0.95% to total £956m, to this year when such spending has risen by 4.5% (£44m) to reach a 9-year high of £1.028bn.

ISP and mobile operator Vodafone UK has today published their latest quarterly results (financial Q2 FY22), which reveals that their fixed broadband base added another +22,000 customers (vs +29k in the previous quarter) to make for a total base of 962,000. But their mobile base sat unchanged on 16,994,000.

AFL, a subsidiary of Fujikura in Japan, has today officially opened a new facility in Swindon (Wiltshire) that will become their first factory in the UK and Europe to produce a “new” type of fibre optic broadband cable, which is being used by network operators like Openreach (BT) to support their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) rollout.
