Netomnia has today announced that they’ve successfully secured £123 million of funding to support the ongoing UK rollout of their 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network (XGS-PON), which only started fairly recently and aims to cover 1 million homes and businesses by the end of 2023.

Broadcaster ITV and broadband ISP Virgin Media (VMO2) have today signed a new 5-year commercial partnership, which will deliver “deeper integration” of ITV’s programming, IPTV rights and features into the operator’s future IPTV based Pay TV products. As well as enabling customers to maintain access to ITV’s content.

Business ISP Baltic Broadband, which typically offers a mix of fixed wireless and full fibre broadband to firms in the Liverpool area, has introduced an unusual new product called the ‘Baltic Backpack‘ – designed to be introduced to tackle areas of slow or failed broadband, seemingly by harnessing multiple cellular networks.

The collapse of UK civil engineering firm Complete Utilities this week (here), which disrupted ISP Gigaclear’s rollout of gigabit-capable broadband, resulted in around 300 staff being told via email that they no longer had a job. In response, an unspecified number of those former employees are attempting to sue the firm.

The CEO of CityFibre, Greg Mesch, has revealed that the UK operator is already in “advanced conversations” with rival alternative networks (AltNet), which could see them harness some of their multi-billion investment pot to help grow their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network coverage via acquisitions.

The BT Group has published their Q2 2021/22 results, which reports that their consumer ISP division now has a total of 945,000 broadband customers on their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network (up from 860K last quarter), while Openreach has grown their UK FTTP coverage to 5.78m premises (up from 5.16m). Build costs have also fallen.

Virgin Media and O2 (VMO2) have today published their latest joint (merged) results for Q3 2021, which reveals that their full fibre (FTTP) network rollout reached another 67,000 UK premises in the quarter (down from 89K in Q2) and their total fixed broadband customer based hit 5,536,400 (up by +42.3K in Q3 vs +35.7K in Q2).

Civil engineering firm Complete Utilities, which has been working with UK ISP Gigaclear to help build gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband networks, has suddenly ceased trading, casting doubt on existing projects. Another street works firm, NMCN, also recently went into administration – hampering CityFibre.

Pay TV solutions provider Netgem this week reported that the decision by Origin Broadband UK to appoint an administrator (here), which came after the ISP struggled to tackle over £20m in losses, resulted in the TV firm taking the decision to “write-off” some £422,000 (500,000 Euros) worth of “unpaid invoices“.

Fixed wireless broadband ISP Solway Communications, which has built its network across parts of Cumbria (England) and recently began deploying some limited Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) infrastructure again, has today become the latest in a long line of internet providers to be acquired by Voneus for an undisclosed sum.

Broadband giant BT has reportedly hired advisory firm Robey Warshaw LLP to work alongside Goldman Sachs, which was appointed for a similar reason last year (here), to help boost their defences against a possible takeover attempt by Patrick Drahi’s Altice UK, which in June 2021 (here) acquired a 12.1% equity stake worth c.£2bn.

The Enterprise M3 Local Enterprise Partnership (EM3LEP) has begun inviting private sector firms to express an interest in bidding for work on their plan to build and operate a new 94km long “full fibre” network, which aims to help deliver gigabit-capable broadband to business and communities across Surrey and Hampshire.

Worcestershire-based wireless and full fibre broadband ISP Airband has today secured a significant £100m investment boost (debt financing) to help accelerate their rollout of a new ultrafast Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network, which will now aim to cover 600,000 UK premises by the end of 2025.

Emtelle UK, which is a global manufacturer of blown fibre and ducted network solution, has secured a multi-million pound contract to support Phase One of Ogi‘s £200m project (here) – backed by Infracapital – to deploy a new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network to 150,000 premises in South Wales by 2025.

UK ISP Virgin Media Business (VMO2) has secured a major new state aid supported contract from the West Berkshire Council (WBC) in England, which will see them deploy a new “full fibre” broadband and Ethernet network to connect more than 80 public sites (schools, GPs and public libraries etc.) by March 2022.
