Vorboss Vorspin cargo e-bike

Network builder and UK broadband ISP Vorboss, which is investing £300 million to deploy a new 100Gbps full fibre network – dedicated to business – across central London, are preparing to introduce their own-designed “Vorspin” (working title – may change) cargo e-bike around the city in order to support their network rollout.

A new meta-study from consultancy firm Compass Lexecon has examined markets where mergers reduced the number of primary mobile network operators from 4 to 3 and found little evidence to suggest that they harm consumers, which could bode well for Vodafone and Three UK’s proposed, if still somewhat controversial, tie-up.

A new survey of business leaders and decision-makers from 160 UK companies, which was conducted by Neos Networks during June 2023, has claimed that one in every five UK businesses are receiving insufficient broadband speeds. Plus 42% regard moving to higher capacity connectivity in the next 2 years as key to growth plans.

The Oxfordshire County Council (OCC) in England has issued a progress update on their ongoing £7m project to deploy a new gigabit-capable full fibre broadband network to over 175 public sector sites (schools, hospitals etc.), which reveals that 171 of the sites have been completed, while a further 22 sites are now due to be upgraded by 2024.

In a hint of what might happen in the UK a little further down the road. Sky Ireland and Virgin Media Ireland recently signed a significant wholesale network access agreement, which will enable Sky’s customers to harness Virgin’s full fibre broadband ISP network in the country.

Low-cost mobile operator iD Mobile (Currys), which uses Three UK’s national 4G and 5G network via a virtual operator (MVNO) partnership, has today announced a 25% year-on-year growth in service subscriptions that has just seen them top the 1.5 million mark – a significant milestone reached ahead of its own projections.

The Chancellor of the UK government, Jeremy Hunt, has today given his 2023 Autumn Statement, which among other things has announced that the new “Full Expensing” policy will be made permanent. The change will help some full fibre broadband and mobile operators to bring down the cost of their network roll-outs. Planning tweaks are also coming.

Mobile operator Vodafone is continuing to try and drum up support for their proposed merger with Three UK, which today sees them publishing new research that claims “expediting” the rollout of Standalone 5G (mobile broadband) could contribute an additional £7.4bn to the UK economy by 2030 compared to a slower deployment.

Network builder and UK broadband ISP Vorboss, which is investing £300m to build their 100Gbps full fibre network – dedicated to business – across central London (they’ve built over 500km of fibre since 2020), has launched a new product called ‘Retail Connect’ – offering speeds up to 10Gbps to the city’s “glass-front” retail outfits from just £150 a month.

Energy and telecoms provider Telecom Plus, which trades as UW (Utility Warehouse), has published their latest H1 FY24 results today and revealed that their broadband ISP has a total customer base of 363,595 (up by 22,203 in the year) and their mobile base hit 424,114 (up by 60,052). The operator also has a new CEO.

Business UK broadband ISP Commsworld has revealed that they’re due to complete a major £15 million network and IT upgrade of Renfrewshire Council’s Wide Area Network (WAN), which forms part of the Connectivity as a Service (CaaS) contract that was signed a few years ago to help modernise local public sector sites.

Network technology firm Xantaro has revealed that they’ve launched a new “turnkey street cabinet” solution, which is designed to support UK alternative networks with their rollout of gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband infrastructure, and it’s already been adopted by ISPs GoFibre and Upp (now acquired by nexfibre).

The Digital Connectivity Forum (DCF), an industry think-tank for the UK Government, has today published new guidance to telecoms SMEs on how they can reach Net Zero targets (i.e. the goal of an organisation to remove as many carbon emissions as they produce).
