Mobile operator Three UK has today announced that after 9 long years their CEO, Dave Dyson, is to step down from his role for “personal reasons.” Replacing him will be the current CEO of Three Ireland, Robert Finnegan, who from 30th March 2020 will act as CEO for both operators (talk about a workaholic!).

Rural focused fixed wireless and full fibre (FTTP) ISP Airband, which aims to cover a further 50,000 premises across the whole of England and Wales by 2021, has so far hired an additional 40 staff this year and they’ve just appointed Jeffrey Kriek to be their new Chief Financial Officer (CFO).

Cable ISP Virgin Media UK has today announced that they’ve awarded a series of new regional build contracts for their gigabit-capable broadband and TV network to 6 national partners (worth £500m per year). On top of that they’ve also brought more than 700 customer-facing engineers back in-house to improve customer service.

Hampshire-based broadband ISP Onestream, which launched in 2016 and sells a range of affordable ADSL2+ and FTTC based bundles to consumers, has appointed the former COO of Mobile Phones Direct, James Carr, to be its new CEO. The provider now aspires to become the country’s “largest independent ISP.”

SSEEnterprise Telecoms (SSEET), which manages a large fibre optic network that runs across the United Kingdom, has launched a new independently chaired Technical User Group (TUG) that aims to bring together 5 of the country’s top water companies to help “improve nationwide connectivity“, as well as reduce pollution and flooding.

Mobile operator O2 has today announced that it aims to become the UK’s “first net zero mobile network.” As part of that they’ve pledged to remove carbon emissions from their entire business and network by the end of 2025, whilst also working with supply chain partners (e.g. Smartphone makers) to cut emissions by 30%.

Full fibre builders take note. Global investment firm Blackstone is in the process of establishing a dedicated European infrastructure team, which among other things is looking for opportunities to invest billions of pounds into UK infrastructure upgrades including energy, water systems, transport and broadband ISP networks.

Whilst the ‘Church of Full Fibre‘ is now operating a broader admissions policy (cable and 5G are both firmly welcome) the race to build Full Fibre Britain is well and truly on. With around thirty operators planning or actively building, there are real ‘first mover’ advantages for the fleet -footed operator.

Mobile operator Three UK, which from the end of this month will have expanded their new ultrafast 5G mobile (mobile broadband) network to cover 65 new locations (here), has signed a new nationwide backhaul capacity deal to harness Cityfibre’s growing full fibre network in order to fuel their new service.

Cable broadband ISP Virgin Media recently confirmed that it intends to close 25 of its stores and kiosks across the United Kingdom, which will put around 110 jobs at risk. Once completed the move will leave around 53 stores and kiosks open across the country but staff fear that more may follow.

The Colchester Borough Council (CBC) in Essex appears to be in the process of approving a proposal from Swedish operator VXFIBER, which is looking to invest £10m in order to build a new gigabit-capable “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband ISP network that will eventually cover most of the town (homes and businesses).

Budget broadband ISP TalkTalk, which is currently in the process of selling their FibreNation FTTH network to Cityfibre for £200m (here), has today announced a £500m corporate bond issue that looks like it will be used to help refinance the provider’s existing debt pile.

Cityfibre has secured the contract to roll-out a new “full fibre” (Dark Fibre) network to connect 170 public sector sites (e.g. schools, libraries and offices) across the West Midlands city of Wolverhampton. The deal is being supported by £4.9m of public funding under the UK Gov’s Local Full Fibre Network (LFFN) scheme.

Broadband ISP Zen Internet has today announced that they’ve appointed TalkTalk’s former Commercial Director, Jon Perkins, to become their new Strategy Director. Perkins will also sit on Zen’s Executive Committee and be responsible for strategy, marketing and product.

Scotland-based UK business ISP Commsworld today claims to have become the first operator to take advantage of Openreach’s (BT) new Dark Fibre X (DFX) product, which is only focused upon serving the limited inter-exchange connectivity market. As a result broadband speeds of 10Gbps may reach several Borders towns.

Civil engineering firm Morrison Telecom Services (MTS), part of the M Group Services, has today secured an Openreach (BT) Network Services Agreement (ONSA), which will see them helping the operator to deploy and maintain their fibre broadband ISP networks across multiple parts of the UK.

Broadband ISP and telecoms giant BT Group has today announced that they intend to hire a further 700+ UK apprentices and graduates as part of their September 2020 intake plan, which is down from the 900 that have been added over the past 12 months.
