Cityfibre Ultrafast Broadband Street Barriers 2023

Network operator CityFibre has revealed that, following an “ongoing review of prioritisation of our deployment locations“, they have taken the decision to pause their £40m project to deploy a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network across the Wiltshire town of Swindon.

Hampshire-based network builder and gigabit broadband ISP toob, which is currently rolling out its own full fibre (FTTP) network across the South of England (e.g. Southampton, Camberley, Aldershot, Farnborough, Fareham and Gosport), has today separately expanded their coverage into parts of Berkshire via CityFibre’s network.

Business communications and broadband ISP Spitfire has today announced an extension of their existing partnership with UK network operator CityFibre, which will enable them to sell the operator’s layer 2 business Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband product to customers.

Mobile operator and UK ISP Vodafone has today released their Q2 FY24 financial results, which saw their fixed line broadband base grow more slowly to total 1.292 million customers (up by 27k in the Q2 vs 42k in Q1 FY24), while their mobile base increased to 18.242 million (up by 218k vs 104k in the previous quarter).

The Connecting Cambridgeshire programme in England, which is led by the Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Combined Authority, has today highlighted another example of how their “Dig Once” policy is helping to accelerate the roll-out of gigabit broadband – by ensuring new bus and cycleways are pre-built with fibre ducting.

CityFibre has today added a new “True Gig” 1.2Gbps wholesale broadband product for UK ISPs on its growing Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network, which, much like Openreach’s similar 1.2Gbps pilot, will enable retail providers to advertise true 1000Mbps speeds to consumers.

Mobile operator and UK ISP Vodafone has this morning confirmed that they will finally launch a CityFibre based Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTT) broadband package that offers symmetric speeds of 2.2Gbps (Gigabits per second) during “early 2024“, which will come with their premium “Pro II Broadband” features as standard.

Customers of UK mobile operator and broadband ISP Vodafone, specifically those taking their original Pro Broadband (Pro 1) package for homes, have been informed that the included WiFi booster device will soon lose the use of its built-in Alexa voice assistant. This is because the new home broadband app they’re planning to launch doesn’t support it.

Network access provider CityFibre has updated on the progress of its work to roll-out a new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network across the city of Glasgow in Scotland, which started in 2021 and is costing c. £270m. The project is currently still due to be “substantially completed” by the end of 2025.

Communications, insurance and energy provider Utility Warehouse (Telecom Plus) has today become the latest broadband ISP to join CityFibre’s growing national Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network to help reach more homes, which is being handled via their existing relationships with TalkTalk’s Wholesale division.

Gigabit broadband ISP YouFibre, which sells packages via Netomnia and Cityfibre’s respective 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) networks – across different parts of the United Kingdom, has today reported that they now have a total customer base of 50,000 (up from 22,000 at the start of 2023 and 45,000 in August 2023).

CityFibre has announced that they’ve awarded their “first round of contracts” to civil engineering firms under their state-aid supported Project Gigabit broadband rollout contracts in Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, Hampshire and Suffolk. The deployments will bring full fibre (FTTP) lines to a total of 715,000 extra rural properties.

Back in 2022 we reported that budget UK broadband ISP TalkTalk was running a new trial (here), which gave “some” existing customers a free automatic upgrade to full fibre (FTTP) broadband – provided they were covered by the network and didn’t already have such a package. But fast-forward 13 months and this is no longer just a trial.

The Sheffield City Council (SCC) has ordered CityFibre to cease its roll-out of a new 10Gbps capable full fibre (FTTP) broadband ISP network in part of the South Yorkshire (England) City, which occurred after its contractor breached a permit and allowed night works to continue on well past the 11pm limit.

Leicester-based broadband ISP Gigabit Networks, which previously focused on connecting premises across the Midlands of England via CityFibre’s full fibre network (they also work with FullFibre Limited), has today announced the expansion of their service availability to encompass CityFibre’s national footprint.

CityFibre has confirmed to ISPreview that they’ve recently taken the decision to exit a number of UK full fibre (FTTP) broadband contracts with build partners for a variety of reasons. One of those is known to be the Kier Group, which held various contracts for places such as Weston-Super-Mare, Cheltenham, Gloucester, Bath and Worcester etc.
