The Government has launched a consultation to help it decide upon a new procurement approach for future state aid supported broadband deployment projects under the national Broadband Delivery UK programme, which is unable to sign new contracts until an agreement can be reached.

The Central Government has disappointed those calling for ultrafast pure fibre optic broadband connections (FTTH/P) to be rolled out across the United Kingdom by rebuffing the idea as part of its response to a European Commission consultation on connectivity needs post-2020.

The Council of Europe has today issued a set of “network neutrality guidelines” that call for mobile and broadband providers to treat Internet traffic equally, without discrimination or restriction, and for member states (e.g. UK) to support this via the “development of national legal frameworks“.

The Government’s Broadband Delivery UK programme is close to securing a new approval from Europe for the use of state aid in their national roll-out of “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) services, which has been stalled since the original umbrella agreement expired at the end of June 2015.

As expected the European Parliament has, without further change, today given the final approval needed for new rules to be introduced that aim to protect open Internet access (Net Neutrality) from unfair restrictions and put an end to costly mobile roaming charges, but there are plenty of loop holes.
