The incumbent telecoms operator for Hull (East Yorkshire), KCOM, has today unveiled the next set of rollout locations for their “ultrafast” Lightstream fibre optic broadband (FTTP/C) network, which is now entering its final deployment phase before completion next year.

The Office of the Telecommunications Adjudicator (OTA2) confirms that UK ISPs have raised a new Statement of Requirement (SOR) request to encourage more data sharing for both ADSL and FTTC (VDSL2) based broadband products, which could result in a more effective engineer repair process.

Fibre optic network builder Cityfibre has filed for a Judicial Review of last year’s decision by the UK Advertising Standards Authority, which ruled that it was “not materially misleading” for ISPs to describe slower hybrid fibre services (e.g. FTTC / HFC DOCSIS) as “fibre broadband.”

Internet and mobile provider EE has discounted the price of their fixed line home broadband and phone (line rental) bundles for new customers, which will be available to order until 4th April 2018. The new offer prices apply for the first 18 months of service (contract term).

National ISP Vodafone has today announced that they are refreshing their range of fixed line home broadband packages, which among other things will see their old copper line ADSL packages being “retired” and the introduction of a minimum speed guarantee on their FTTC “fibre” services.

After last year’s Proof of Concept (PoC) test Openreach has now decided to start applying “low level error correction” on all new UK Fibre-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC / VDSL2) superfast broadband lines, which they hope will result in fewer fault reports being made by customers during the initial provision phase.

The telecoms regulator has today completed several wholesale market reviews, which among other things will force Openreach (BT) to adopt stiffer Quality of Service standards (installations and repairs), open up their cable ducts to rival ISPs and introduce a big price cut on 40Mbps FTTC broadband lines.

The Government’s £1.6bn+ publicly funded Broadband Delivery UK project has published its latest progress update to the end of 2017, which reveals that it has so far helped 4,772,207 extra premises across the United Kingdom to be reached by a fixed “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) network.

The Swindon Borough Council‘s £1.9m contract with UKB Networks, which has been building an LTE (4G) based Fixed Wireless Access network that can bring “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) to 19,500 premises (99.4% total coverage), is facing a fresh challenge over changes to its deployment.

UK ISP PlusNet Business has reduced the price of their ‘up to’ 76Mbps (19Mbps upload) FTTC based “Unlimited Business Fibre Broadband” and phone line rental package to just £33.50 +vat a month for the first 12 months of service (£47.5 thereafter), which will be available to order until 3rd April 2018.

Internet provider uno (uno Comms Ltd) has today become the next UK ISP after BT to pilot a new range of “ultrafast broadband” packages based off the fledgling hybrid fibre G.fast network, which can offer download speeds of up to 160Mbps (30Mbps up) and 330Mbps (50Mbps up).
